So, I was thinking about our draft and I've come to the conclusion that the Broncos should trade up in the first round in order to get a true difference maker. If you disagree with that, I'd love to know why. As it is, I think it's safe to say that we'll be picking 22nd and 32nd (yeah, I just called us winning it all) so considering that we don't have many holes to fill, I think we'd be smart to consolidate our picks and move up. From what I've heard, there are a few teams in the top dozen willing to trade down in order to amass picks, so lets take a look at the alternatives.

First of all, I think it's safe to say that the Broncos greatest needs are the following: a #1 WR, a ballhawk S and a pass-rushing DT. That said, I don't think there is a true, even close to sure fire, #1 type WR in this draft. That leaves us with the choice of either snagging a top safety prospect or a pass-rushing interior lineman. Honestly, I think both options will be exhausted by the time we pick at #22. So now, in no particular order, here are our options:

Option A: I've heard the Jets (#4 pick overall) are looking to trade down because they have multiple holes they wish to fill. That said, moving into the top 5 presents an interesting dilema. First of all, no safety is worth that high of a pick. That said, their are no pass-rushing DT options worth that pick. So, we'd need to get creative and this is what I've come up with. What if we move up to #4 and take Mario Williams, DE, NC State? We would then need to more Trevor Pryce back to DT. I think that would greatly improve our pass rush all the way around. Williams has been called the best DE prospect since Julius Peppers and that is high praise. Our D-line would be Williams - Pryce - Warren - Brown. That's at least three top 4 picks (can't remember when Pryce was taken) and would give us an incredible amount of talent up front. As icing on the cake, the Packers would almost certainly take AJ Hawk at #5, leaving the Raiders without their top two choices at #6. Unless Pryce would be considered somehow inaffective inside, I think this move would literally improve every single one of our spots on the D-line.

Option B: The 49ers are also apparently looking to move down to acumulate picks, so we could move up to #7 as well. They are the first team that can be projected to take a DB, so this is significant. We could then snag someone like Michael Huff, DB, Texas or Jimmy Williams, DB, Virginia Tech to move to safety in our defense. That would be ideal. They are both possible CB prospects, but would make excellent ballhwaks at the safety position. They have each played that position in college and would not be too much of a reach at that spot. They would compliment John Lynch perfectly and would help our CBs (especially the young ones) greatly.

Option C: I think that Michael Huff and Santonio Holmes will not fall past the #13 (Ravens taking Huff) and #14 (Eagles taking Holmes) picks in this draft, so we could move directly ahead of them to take either if they were to be there. I'm not sold on Santonio, but a good performance at the combine might make him worth the move. Huff, however, I am very high on. I think he might be the ideal choice for the Broncos in this draft. NBot sure who else would be willing to make a deal with us, but there will almost certainly be at least one.

Well, this has gotten rather long, so I guess I'll stop now in the hopes that someone will actually read all this and still feel like responding. Before I do that, however, I guess it's worth discussing the possible alternatives if we were to stay put. I guess we could hope for a top safety to fall to #22 and still get something of worth at #32 at a position of need. I guess we could take a chance with Claude Wroten, DL, LSU at the end of the 1st and wish for either Darnell Bing, S, USC or Ko Simpson, S, South Carolina (or maybe a WR) at #22. I just happen to think moving up to get a better prospect would be best. What do you all think?

good to see you are talking about the draft before your team gets knocked out of the playoffs. hopefully they beat the steelers and lose to the panthers

If you read what I wrote, I did predict that the Broncos would win it all this year Funny thing is that I predicted a Carolina v. Denver Super Bowl in the preseason (unfortunately before I was a member of this forum). I'll be rooting for Panthers this week, I'm glad you'll be doign the same for my Broncos.

That's why I said "take a chance with Claude Wroten". Picking guys with such problems is always a gamble, but he's undeniably talented and will be taken in the first two rounds. Thanks for actually reading the post.

EJ, I don't want to trade up. This draft is filled with value, I truly believe a difference maker will be able to fall to #22, Kiper predicted Kiwanuka would and we'd take Bing with #32.

In my opinion, the value difference is not that big and due to the combine, I'm more than certain (as I said) that someone will fall. Given past history, we usually package a pick and a player to move up and not two picks. I'm not sure, but I'm happy with where we're at for now. *shrugs*
