IMO there is waaaayyyyyyyyyyyyy too much emphasis on the Senior Bowl game itself. Ask any scout and he will tell you that the practices leading up to the game are immensely more important than the game itself. Sure players such as LaDanian Tomlinson and Phillip Rivers turned great Senior Bowl performance into early draft day selections, but their performances during the week were just as impressive, if not more so.
Just ask NFL rookie of the year Carnell Williams, who only took part in one play in last years Senior Bowl, but looked great during the workouts all week. Cadillac was the most impressive offensive player, not in just the eyes of his senior bowl coach and future NFL coach Jon Gruden, but in the minds of a huge majority of the coaches and scouts in attendance, from the practices alone.
“There’s no question that Cadillac’s outstanding performance in Mobile throughout Senior Bowl Week played a major role in his not only ending up with the Bucs, but also enabling him to become the fifth player selected in the draft,” said Senior Bowl President Steve Hale. “He is a prime example of what a player can accomplish by choosing to compete and spending a week with the decision makers of the NFL at our event each January.”
On the flip side players such as Darren Sproles and Bill Swancutt had huge Senior Bowl performances but at the NFL level are at best career back-ups and special team contributors.
The Senior Bowl is what it is, little more than a glorified all-star game. I can’t wait, its fun to watch, but don’t get too carried away. So instead set your TiVo’s for…
