Last year, a few of my buddies and I went to the draft. I don't think you need a hotel unless you are staying for day 2. We went out on Friday night, had a good time in NYC and then came over and hopped in line for the draft. The seating is a little weird, so I don't think it matters if you are first in line or 2000. But I would get there around 4 or 5am. We stood in line, they handed out the tickets at 9am and then we went and got breakfast. The NFL started letting people in around 10:30am to the venue.
My personal opinion is that the draft is much better on TV. When you are there it is great for the first 5-10 picks. Those guys are there and they interview them. After that, there really is not much going on at the draft. The pick comes up, but unless you are listening to the headphones they give you, you get none of the info on the guy. You don't get any more information for being there, in fact I think you get less. Inside they do not broadcast the live feed for everyone, they have different things going on. So when someone on ESPN is talking about a certain person, you have to listen to the headset they give you to listen.
Now I will say that some people absolutely love being there. The only thing I can say is you need to go and see for yourself. But I love the draft, but from now on will forever sit in front of my TV in my underwear watching the draft.
