Decided to probe around the beat writers at TSN for the top 5 teams in the draft and get a feel for what could be cooking. Basically I mostly heard the same old same old this time of year, "it's to early" or I was given the obvious answer but when I contacted Rich Cimini the writer that covers the Jets and appears in the New York Daily News I was taken off guard.

Anyone who knows Rich will know how close he is with Robert Wood Johnson IV and GM Mike Tannenbaum so I tend to pay a little more attention to Rich when he speaks.

Seems Mike has taken a keen intrest in Jay Cutler and has heard enough through the grapevine to know the Titans have their own agenda when it comes to Cutler. Not saying it outright but more then eluding to the fact that the Jets could be serious contenders when it comes to the Cutler sweep stakes and so much so they would be willing to do what ever it takes to jump the Titans for him.

Problem here being the Saints are not willing to take that risk at #2. Basically by trading out of the #2 spot the Saints would be ending any hopes they might have of landing Leinart knowing if they swapped places with the Jets the Titans while high on Cutler would be more then willing to take Leinart.

Trading up to 3 with the Titans is not likely to happen. Tennesse is not going to give one of the top 3 QB's away.

Now we are left with the #1 pick. The only team in the top 4 that won't be looking for a QB and would be more then happy to trade out of that spot knowing very well the odd's of landing Bush at 4 behind 3 QB hungry teams is still possible and worst case scenario they would land a 15 year franchise OT in the Brick.

Great for Houston but wait! What does NY get by trading up to the #1 pick? Well they get their choice of QB's right?

Not so fast say's Rich, Cutler is their man.

Again I ask, how early is to early?

Not sure if you wrote this...but if you did...since you're a writer and all...it's 'too.'

Anyway, if Cutler works his way above the Lions pick, I could see this as the top-eight breakdown:

1. Bush
2. Leinhart
3. Young
4. Cutler
5. Hawk
6. Mario Williams
7. Ferguson
8. Ngata

This leaves the Lions with exactly the same choice of second-tier first rounders as before. I'd really hope that 1) Cutler and one other offensive player raise their stock into the top eight, 2) A DE or LB tears up the combine and makes the no. 9 pick easy, 3) Cutler falls (hopefully drawing trade interest).

I'm no expert, so what does everyone think of this?
