This might have seemed like something silly to say a month ago, but Russell is hot and might be knocking on the door. Here's a look at the raw numbers for a comparison.
This year (2006)
Quinn- team record 4-1, 61.7 %, 1402 yards, 13 td, 4 int
Russell- team record 4-1, 70.4 %, 1246 yards, 10 td, 1 int
Career
Quinn- start record 22-14, 9738 yards, 71 td, 36 int
Russell- start record 18-3, 4742 yards, 34 td, 14 int
No doubt Quinn has the edge on Russell as far as experience, but that isn't always a good thing (less wear and tear on the body is a positive). Quinn will also get the nod from coming from a more pass oriented offense and he is little better of an athlete. While Russell is a greater pure passer and has greater physical tools for the position.

Russell has the physical tools...no doubt about it. Better pure passer....beg to differ. Russell certainly isn't hurting his chances for coming out early though...he is playing well. Let's put his stats up against Brian Brohm....
career
Russell - start record 18-3 4742 yards 34 TD 14 INT 1 rushing TD in starts 147.8 QB rating
Brohm - start record 11-2 4444 yards 28 TD 8 INT 6 rushing TD in starts 161.4 QB rating
I'll take Brohm stats anyday here...regardless you are in fine hands with both QB's.

This year (2006)
Troy Smith - team record 5-0, 65.6 %, 1070 yards, 12 TDs, 2 INTs
Career
Troy Smith - start record 18-2, 61.8 %, 4248 passing yards, 36 TDs, 9 INTs, 988 rushing yards, 13 TDs
We all know he can scramble. He hasn't been doing it this year because now we all know he can pass. OH how he can pass.
He's gotta be in the top 5 QBs this year, no question.

I'd take any of those four on the Bucs. If I had my choice, I'd take Quinn or Smith followed by Brohm and then Russell. If our line was better, Brohm above Smith.

Smith would be money in the NFC south. How's Gradkowski looking?

No idea yet. He wasn't terrible in pre-season, but that was playing against other backup/3rd string guys. He's had a couple of snaps in live games this season, but he's just looked flat out lost. I don't expect much from him right now, it should take a minimum of two or three seasons for a QB to get Gruden's version of the WCO down. Truth of the matter is, if Simms doesn't come back this season, McCown should be our starter after he comes off the PUP list in Week 6.
Either way man, our line is still awful, our first rounder Joseph is still out, and whoever is back there is going to get killed.

Will Brohm be coming out this year? I know he is injured, so I don't know how big of an impact that will have on his draft stock.

Not sure....since he has missed parts of two years maybe it is best to not risk injury again....then again if he stays in there will still be injury questions.....50-50 I'd say.

Let's just go ahead and call the Florida Gators defense the exposers of poser SEC QBs.
Eric Ainge, Tennessee
Pre-Swamp: A surgical 35 of 47 for a ridiculous 624 yards, 7 TD, 2 INT and 0 sacks.
In the Swamp: A paltry 17 of 32 for just 183 yards, 0 TD, 2 INT and 4 sacks.
JeMarcus Russell, LSU
Pre-Swamp: A scorching 81 of 115 for an impressive 1246 yards, 10 TD, 1 INT and 2 sacks.
In the Swamp: An inflated 24 of 42 for only 225, 1 early TD, 3 costly INT and 1 sack.
Yes, Russell has a huge arm, great size and a flare for the dramatic, but he's terribly inaccurate and his lack of mobility and poise cost him against even remote pressure. All in all I think he's little more than a lot of potential right now and I don't think potential gets you picked in the first round. I'd be looking at Quinn and Smith long before I even think of Russell. At this point, I'd personally take Brohm and Stanton over him in this upcoming draft. If he doesn't step up and perform in some big SEC games this year, he might even slip below a guy like Jordan Palmer and maybe even Drew Tate.
