Spencer is arguably having the best season of any defensive end in college football this year. He is basically living in opponents backfield and not only does he do a great job rushing the passer but he is providing excellent tackling ability from the defensive end position. He runs down plays and is not just a sellout pass rusher, he is an all around defensive end.

Sure he might not be drafted that high because of the great talent at the defensive end position in this years draft but if put in the right situation he could have great success at the next level. Just look at Shaun Phillips, another Purdue defensive end that was drafted late but playing wonderful football for the Chargers as a rush outside linebacker.

Here are the top defensive end prospects in the up coming draft. Adams with his athletic ability is most likely number one, but I could see Spencer being ranked higher than Moss, Carriker and Jackson. Moss is the ideal long lengthy athlete but benefits some from an amazing Florida defensive line I believe. Carriker is a stud defensive end and is a natural run stopper and big body, but is most likely ideal for a 3/4 defense and he does not fit into all defensive systems. Same can go for Woodley, a wonderful 3/4 outside linebacker pass rushing prospect possibly, but not all teams would want him in their system.

Arguably the top defensive end prospects in the upcoming draft.
Gaines Adams
Lamarr Woodley
Quentin Moses
Anthony Spencer
Jarvis Moss
Adam Carriker
Lawrence Jackson

Still up in the air what will happen come draft day, Jackson and Moss might not come out who knows. Just based on the field productivity though, Spencer is at or near the top of that list. He is having an amazing season.

Jarvis Moss is too small to be an elite prospect unless he's added 30 lbs without me knowing

SPECNCER HAS HAD A NICE SEASON SO FAR. SHOWS A GOOD BURST OFF THE SNAP AND QUICKNESS OFF THE EDGE. GOOD IN PURSUIT AS WELL. NEEDS TO IMPROVE AT THE POINT OF ATTACK, AND I DON'T THINK HE LOOKS QUITE AS BIG AS HIS LISTED SIZE EITHER. RIGHT NOW I'D HAVE HIM IN THE 3RD ROUND RANGE.

Exactly, at first its like Anthony Spencer who cares about him. But if you see what he is doing this year it is quite impressive. Sure he is not great at the point of attack but his quickness makes up for it much less the fact that he has almost 8-10 tackles a game and leads the nation in tackles behind the line of scrimmage. That shows that he is getting great penetration and creating big time problems for every OT he is going up against. He should be shooting up the draft rankings real soon.

If I'm adding this up right, he already has 17.5 TFL's, 7.5 sacks and 59 tackles. Sick #'s so far. Is he only playing DE? Lotsa tackles there for a DE....unless Purdue fudges the #'s some

Well of course being on a bad defense allows you to be on the field longer and get more "statistics". Still in game production does matter, and he is making plays when his teammates are not and he is playing hard when he teammates are not. Also, one would think since they have a weak pass defense it would be harder to get sacks because receivers would be open, that is obviously not the case though.

Spencer is a awesome player and I say again he is destroying offensive tackles this season.

Strengths: Is quick, smart and instinctive. Consistently is the first defensive lineman moving at the snap, forcing offensive tackles to move their feet. Uses hands well to move offensive tackles. On running plays away from him, does a great job of checking for fakes/rollouts before pursuing the ball. Can chase down ballcarriers from the backside. Takes on run blocks with good leverage, and uses hands well to string along outside runs and then force the runner back inside. When can't reach the quarterback, gets hands up into the passing lanes. Shows great technique.

Weaknesses: Looks more like a linebacker. Lacks explosiveness to consistently beat offensive tackles around the corner. Lacks strength. Struggles to shed blockers once they get a hold of him. Gets chopped to the ground too often, and does not always move through traffic well.

Bottom line: Spencer is not an exciting prospect but grows on you. In the games we graded him, Spencer was involved in a play every 6.7 snaps, which is excellent for a defensive end. Spencer is a tough and polished end who probably will be drafted slightly higher than we rate him because he can bulk up to 270 pounds or so after the season and will run well in pre-draft workouts. He can become a solid NFL starting defensive end but never will be a dominant, explosive pass rusher. If drafted by a 3-4 team, Spencer could shift to outside linebacker but will need work in coverage.
