Peterson likely out for season with broken collarboneAssociated Press

NORMAN, Okla. -- Heisman Trophy hopeful Adrian Peterson broke his collarbone on a dive into the end zone Saturday, and the Oklahoma star running back will miss the rest of the regular season.

Peterson was injured on his last carry of the game -- a 53-yard scoring run with about 6:40 remaining that completed the 23rd-ranked Sooners' 34-9 win over Iowa State.

Peterson ran for 183 yards and two touchdowns.

Peterson, a junior, who has 1,030 yards this season and entered the weekend as the nation's fourth-leading rusher, was second in Heisman voting as a freshman. He was playing for the first time in years before his father, who had spent about eight years in federal prison for money laundering.

"Just diving into the end zone and when he landed, he landed wrong," Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said. "At this point it looks like the best thing, the earliest he would be ready to play, would be a bowl game."

Does this knock him out of the Top 5 in this year's draft?

Obviously Peterson probably will still go out, however if he loves Oklahoma football and if he does not come back this year it would not surprise me if he returns for his Senior season.

If he comes out though it would be hard not to take him top 5.

However, his running style must change. He obviously does not have the physical durability to run the way he does. It is awesome that he is so aggressive and he punishes any defender that tries to tackle him, but when that means getting injured something has to change.

Obvious top 5 pick though regardless of the injury. A shoulder, that is nothing, if McGahee can come back from a much worse injury and still be a 1st round pick Peterson should not have a problem.

I don't see the correlation with MaGahee. MaGahee was a late first rounder to a team that was already set at the position. There wasn't an immediate need for him to perform, which any top 5 pick would be required to provide. Peterson should still be the top back, but there isn't a whole lot of competition for that title this year. I think he'll go out of the top 10, if only cause all the teams in the top 10 have bigger needs.

A collarbone injury should have nothing to do with his draft status. The McGahee injury comparisons are quite hilarious actually. This happened in the 5th game of the season, with the draft still 7 months away. It was a collarbone, which has no effect on his running and can be healed in plenty of time. The McGahee injury was a knee injury in January with only 3 months until the draft. He will still be a top 10 pick. Yes, I expect him to leave. I wish him the best.
