2007 NFL Draft

DJ Boyer – 1 Round Mock Draft V 4.0 01/04/07
* - Denotes Underclassman
**-Denotes Coin flip will be used to determine who picks 3rd and 4th (Tampa Bay and Cleveland).

Round 1

1. Oakland Raiders-*JaMarcus Russell-QB-LSU
Did the Sugar Bowl push Russell all the way to #1…the answer is no. I think given the choice Al Davis wants someone who can air the ball out and give Randy Moss a reason to stay in Oakland. I think every analyst in America knew Aaron Brooks wouldn’t work in Oakland but one of the main reasons he was brought there was his arm strength. Quinn could still be taken here and to me he is still the best quarterback prospect but Russell has what the Raiders are looking for and gets the nod here.
2. Detroit Lions-Joe Thomas-OT-Wisconsin
The temptation for the Lions to take a quarterback is there but I think that Matt Millen finally recognizes that he is running out of time. While coach Rod Marinelli may lean towards a quarterback I think Millen recognizes he needs a player that will help right away because he may not have another year or two to wait for a quarterback to develop. Thomas brings immediate relief to a team that gave up the most sacks in the NFC last season (63).
3. **Tampa Bay Buccaneers-Brady Quinn-QB-Notre Dame
I think the Buccaneers need the most help on defense but I’m not sure we have a defensive player who right now projects as a top 5 selection. With Quinn still on the board Jon Gruden simply cannot resist. Chris Sims just received and extension and we have seen enough of Bruce Gradkowski to know he is not a long-term NFL starter. A wide receiver here like Ted Ginn Jr. or Calvin Johnson is a possibility.
4. **Cleveland Browns-*Adrian Peterson-RB-Oklahoma
Why wouldn’t a team that finished 31st in rushing offense last year take a look at Adrian Peterson? I think the offensive line is in shambles but with Joe Thomas off the board it makes this an easy selection.
5. Arizona Cardinals-*Jake Long-OT-Michigan
I know Long is on record saying he is coming back to Michigan but kids change their minds all the time. Long is a top 10 talent and I think the injury he suffered last season could eat away at him and cause him to declare this season. If so it would make the Cardinals happy. If Long is gone the Cardinals could stay with a Michigan player (Alan Branch DT) or maybe look at cornerbacks.
6. Washington Redskins-Gaines Adams-DE-Clemson
The secondary for the Redskins wouldn’t be exploited as much with a consistent pass rush. Andre Carter played well during the second half of the season but it’s time to get him some help.
7. Minnesota Vikings-*Calvin Johnson-WR-Georgia Tech
He remains the #1 prospect on my draft board and he would have the opportunity to thrive in Minnesota. With Marcus Robinson gone and Troy Williamson continuing to worry the organization it looks like it’s time for some new blood at receiver.
8. Houston Texans-*Ted Ginn Jr.-WR-Ohio State
With Eric Moulds turning 34 at the start of next season the Texans need to find someone who can come in and fill the void with All Pro Andre Johnson. Ginn gives the Texans plenty of speed and an instant threat in the slot.
9. Miami Dolphins-*Brian Brohm-QB-Louisville
The Dolphins can’t resist with Brohm still on the board. With Nick Saban gone the new regime may want to either cut Dante Culpepper or keep him and do away with Joey Harrington and Cleo Lemon. The sure sign of putting your stamp on a team is with a new franchise quarterback, once the new coach is found we’ll get an indication on where the team could be going.
10. Atlanta Falcons-LaRon Landry-S-LSU
It doesn’t matter who the coach for the Falcons is going to be, the Falcons need help at safety. Chris Crocker doesn’t look like a fit in Atlanta and Lawyer Milloy is in the latter stages of his career. Atlanta takes advantage of having the best safety of the draft still on the board.
11. San Francisco 49ers-*Alan Branch-DT-Michigan
This may not be the position of biggest need but with Branch still on the board the 49ers make a huge upgrade to the middle of the defensive line. Branch is a top 5 talent that San Francisco can get tremendous value on here if he is still on the board.
12. Buffalo Bills-*Dwayne Jarrett-WR-USC
The Bills have Lee Evans developing into one of the best young wide receivers in the game but the offense would be best served getting another dependable target to pair with him. Jarrett also adds size to a receiving corps filled with receivers under 6-0 tall.
13. St. Louis Rams- Paul Posluszny-LB-Penn State
The Rams look for the best player available at this juncture and decide on a linebacker to train behind some older veterans on the team. Posluszny is a player who can be teamed with Will Witherspoon to give the Rams some dependable options at linebacker that can line up in multiple positions.
14. Carolina Panthers-Patrick Willis-LB-Mississippi
The Panthers linebacking corps was a shadow of its former self in 2006 with the loss of Will Witherspoon not properly accounted for and trying to cover for another Dan Morgan concussion. Willis is a tackling machine who can play the middle in case Morgan is lost to injury again.
15. Pittsburgh Steelers-Rufus Alexander-LB-Oklahoma
This pick is probably too high for Alexander but the Steelers make a safe reach here. With an aging linebacking unit the Steelers need young players who can blitz and cover tight ends and Alexander has the athleticism to do both. His short stature (just under 6-1) may cost him a first round spot but he is a perfect gamble for the Steelers defense.
16. Green Bay Packers-Daymeion Hughes-CB-California
Charles Woodson was a nice signing for the Packers but his long injury history means chances are he will be on the sidelines for part of the 2007 season. Al Harris is getting older and young Ahmad Carroll was finally released by the Packers this season. With no corners yet off the board the Packers start planning for the future and take Hughes, a physical corner who can play the run as well.

17. Jacksonville Jaguars-Justin Blalock-Offensive Guard-Texas
The Jaguars have a good thing going with their running game so why not ensure it will be just as productive in 2007? The Jaguars have very little depth at guard and Blalock is the best available at the position.
18. Cincinnati Bengals-*Greg Olsen-TE-Miami (Fla.)
Olsen has already thrown his name into the hat for the 2007 draft and why not, he is the best prospect at the position. Can you imagine just how ridiculous the Bengals passing attack would be with a legitimate receiving threat at the tight end spot to go along with their astounding receiving corps?
19. Tennessee Titans-*Frank Okam-DT-Texas
I find it hard to believe Albert Haynesworth will be back in Tennessee after years of inconsistency and his incident against the Cowboys this past season. If Okam declares he has a shot at being the top defensive tackle taken in this draft. We could see Okam hold out until fellow junior tackle Alan Branch makes his intentions known.
20. New York Giants-*Marshawn Lynch-RB-California
Tiki has his television deal signed, sealed and delivered so the small window he had of returning to the Big Apple next year is closing. Lynch is the #2 back on the board and would combine with Brandon Jacobs for one of the NFC’s best 1-2 running punches.
21. Denver Broncos-Quentin Moses-DE-Georgia
Situational pass-rushers like Elvis Dumervil have provided the Broncos the most consistency this season in the pass-rushing department. Moses gives the Broncos a player who can give an opposing offense multiple looks and has the speed and agility to line up as a linebacker. Moses would be an instant hit in Denver.
22. New England Patriots (From Seattle)-Leon Hall-CB-Michigan
There are changes coming in the New England secondary and this is a defense that always prides itself on having multiple young cornerbacks ready and available. I think a linebacker would be best here but with Willis and Alexander off the board the Patriots go to the secondary.
23. Dallas Cowboys-Jeff Samardzija-WR-Notre Dame
If the Cowboys get assurance that Samardzija will play football and not baseball then he looks like a great fit with a star on his helmet. Terrell Owens and Terry Glenn are in their mid 30’s and Patrick Crayton is still unsigned for 2007 so receiver will be a concern at some point for Dallas.
24. Kansas City Chiefs-*Glenn Dorsey-DT-LSU
The Chiefs defense is starting to turn itself around, the secondary is playing much better, Jared Allen and Tamba Hali look like defensive ends that will stay in Kansas City for a long time. The one area for concern is finding more consistency in the middle of the defense. Dorsey is a fast riser on the draft boards right now and I think he will find himself in the latter stages of the first round if he declares.
25. New Orleans Saints-*Antoine Cason-CB-Arizona
*Antoine Cason CB Arizona
I have Cason as the top corner available in this draft and it looks very likely that he will declare for 2007. The Saints depth chart at corner has multiple questions attached to it so finding a young stud is a likely option.
26. New York Jets-Kenny Irons-RB-Auburn
Kevan Barlow is likely on his way out and if the Jets have a chance to draft Irons then I think Cedric Houston may be as well. Leon Washington did a fantastic job in his rookie season but the Jets see him as their third down option and change-of-pace back. Irons would get a chance to produce right away and the Jets could look for defensive line help in the later rounds of the draft.
27. Philadelphia Eagles-*Reggie Nelson-S-Florida
I have been getting a ton of e-mails letting me know that Reggie Nelson is a safety and not a cornerback (I am aware of this) but there are many who feel he could be a better fit at corner than safety at the NFL level. Philadelphia needs help at both positions so they seem like the perfect team for Nelson. The Eagles have drafted from the Florida schools often during Andy Reid’s time as head coach and in general, the SEC. Nelson gives the Eagles the flexibility to try him at safety and corner and he could end up spending time at both spots.
28. New England Patriots-Anthony Spencer-LB-Purdue
Spencer is a defensive end at Purdue but he is a little undersized and could end up as a blitzing linebacker in a 3-4 set much like another former Purdue standout Shaun Phillips (17.5 sacks in the last 2 years in San Diego). The Patriots go with Spencer here since they drafted a cornerback with their previous first round selection.
29. Indianapolis Colts-Buster Davis-LB-Florida State
The fact that Buster Davis is so short (5-10) will likely keep him out of the first round but if there is a team that will take a chance on him it could be Indianapolis. Does any team take more short players near the top of the draft and prove the experts wrong (Dwight Freeney and Bob Sanders)? The starting cornerbacks are 5-9 and 5-10 and as a defensive coordinator Tony Dungy was known for choosing speed over size. Unless you have lived in a cave you know that Indianapolis has problems stopping the run. The best run stopping middle linebacker left on the board right now is Davis so this seems like a no-brainer.
30. Baltimore Ravens-Troy Smith-QB-Ohio State
Every mock needs at least one shocking pick in the first round right? The Ravens really need help along the interior of the offensive line but with Justin Blalock gone there are no other first round prospects for them to choose from (unless they reach for Josh Beekman of Boston College). The Ravens knew McNair was a 2-3 year option when they brought him to town and although he has improved, I don’t think Brian Billick trusts Kyle Boller enough to make him his everyday quarterback. Smith doesn’t have the measurables you look for in a quarterback but he has a pair of traits the Ravens look for in all of their signal callers. He manages the game well and makes very few mistakes.
31. Chicago Bears-*Sam Baker-OT-USC
Baker is another player who looks like he will return to school but he will stay in my mock until the underclassmen deadline passes. Baker is exactly what the Bears want, an athletic lineman who can block downfield.
32. San Diego Chargers-Aaron Rouse-S-Virginia Tech
All you have to do is look at Aaron Rouse and you can see he is tailor made for the Chargers defense. He is the most physical safety in this draft and some teams are grading him as an outside linebacker. Rouse would be a welcomed addition to the Chargers secondary.

The more I look at the Steelers situation the more I think we're in a "no mans land" at #16.

I do however think Blaylock, Moses or one of the CBs would be a better pick.

RB is not a big need but passing up Lynch would be tough.

DJ, how likely would it be for LaMarr Woodly to fall to our 2nd round pick.

I don't know, I like the idea of having Lynch and Jacobs in the backfield, but I think the Giants would be better suited taking a CB or DE(after all, you never can have enough pass rushers just kidding about the DE) in the first round and taking a RB in the later rounds. But that's just me. Who knows since we don't even know who'll be doing the drafting for the Giants yet. *crosses fingers for Pioli*

Yeah at #11 with him still up there he had to land in Frisco...like I said he is top 5 -6 talent sao it is unlikely but I can see why that would make Niner fans happy.

I changed at the last second...I had you with bBalock and then switched.....big part is I know how much the Steelers are talking about him....just got the feeling they would feel he would be gone by the second round.....but agreed....Blalock was who I had until then....

Woodley in round 2...risky to wait that long.....I know another guy being talked about is Adam Carriker of Nebraska at DE.

I like Rufus... not sure how he fits in da burgh. Also can't see the Phins picking Brohm. Too many issues on both lines and the secondary to invest in a QB with their first pick. Honestly, that is a recipe for disaster and bustdom for Brohm. I think Mueller is a smarter GM than that. The DL is especially suspect... Traylor and Holiday on the interior, how much longer are they going to last? Carter on one end and Taylor on the other. Everyone on that line is OLD. Even with Roth waiting in the wings a DT is much needed.
