CORAL GABLES — University of Miami junior linebacker Jon Beason said Sunday he has decided to skip his senior season to enter the NFL Draft.
Beason is the second junior to announce he is leaving UM early. Tight end Greg Olsen said last week that he was entering the draft.
Beason, 6-feet and 236 pounds, led the Hurricanes this season with 91 tackles, including 10 for loss. He finished his UM career with a game-high 10 tackles in the Hurricanes' 21-20 victory against Nevada in the MPC Computers Bowl on New Year's Eve.
Fear of a serious injury caused Beason to decide to go pro. Beason sustained a right MCL injury against Florida International on Oct. 14 and was forced to sit out the next week against Duke.
"It was definitely a tough decision," Beason said. "I thought about staying because there was still time and an opportunity to get stuff done and win a national championship. But injuries are the No. 1 thing. I've never been hurt before, but after being so close to a season-ending injury, it was scary."
