how can there not be a bears draft thread? then again every bears thread takes on tangents totally unrelated to the original topic, so, not a big surprise.

i digress. i'd like to pull together a topic to post links, thoughts, mocks about an inreasingly critical 07 draft for da bear. i sent aqua net's #1 customer a question in an espn chat today and according to mel, joe staley's draft stock is skyrocketing based on his workouts.

Dan (Chicago, IL): Hey Mel. Now that Ruben Brown is back in the mix, the Bears most pressing needs are OT/OLB. Do you think there is any chance Staley is on the board at #31? If he's not there, do you see them going for the BPA? Potentially a WR like Bowe?

Mel Kiper: (1:10 PM ET ) I think Staley will be gone by the time the Bears pick. The Ravens at 29, along with the Bears, thought he might be there, but he's been one of the fastest risers in this draft. He's gotten stronger, he's got enormous ability and potentially. The O-Line coaches around the league really covet him. He's gone from a late 1st-round pick to a mid-first round pick. He's neck and neck with Levi Brown of Penn State as the 2nd LT drafted now. That's a big factor, because teams like Miami and Houston in the top-10 are looking for LTs, so there's a possibility he could land in the top 10. [/b]

Kevin(Las Vegas,NV): If the Briggs trade does happen, what should Chicago do with that pick? Trade/move up/move down/ select Landry?

Mel Kiper: (1:03 PM ET ) What I think they would do, if they ended up at No. 6, they would look to get out of that spot, because their needs don't really fit that pick. I don't think at that point, there would be that intriguing of a player. Everyone talks about Landry being the best defensive player in the draft...but whoever's picking 6th (Bears or Redskins) would look to move down out of that spot. [/b]

his measurables are off the charts. 4.7/40 for a guy who is almost 6'7" is insane. defensive lineman just keep getting more athletic, so i'm not surprised by this at all.

If they grap Willis at 6 his contract will be close to that of what Briggs is demanding. If they are not willing to invest that money in the LB corps for Briggs I don't think they will for Willis.

If they stay at 6, they should go Landry, since this D needs a stud at Safety.

don't get me wrong, i think landry is an amazing prospect. but why would the bears draft another in the box safety with questionable coverage skills after trading for archuleta? i'm not connecting the dots there...

Dan (Chicago, IL): Hey Matt. The Bears off-season moves seem to pave the way for them to select the BPA at #31. That said what players or positions do you see them targeting?

Matt Williamson: Agreed and don't be shocked if they surprise some people and grab Drew Stanton with that early 2nd rounder they got from the Jets. OLB is their biggest need with Briggs' long term future in jeopardy. Also, Hillenmeyer on the other side is pretty ordinary. There are good OLBs at that area of the draft and I would bet that is what hey do with their first pick. [/b]

Drew Newark, New Jersey: As a die-hard Chicago Bears fan, I just don't understand why the Bears intend to give up their 1st round draft pick along with Lance Briggs in exchange for the #6 pick. Why would they do this and what who would they select with the #6 pick?

Trent Modglin: Keep in mind, this is a deal that Drew Rosenhaus is generating... but with the No. 6 pick, I would see the Bears trying to trade down into the middle of the first round and acquire a second or third as well. It could happen too, if a team sees someone slip past the initial five spots. At some point, they may have to cut their losses with Briggs, who doesn't look like he'll be happy if he has to spend any more time in Chicago.[/b]
