Also, it's not part of his job. He isn't even hired yet and won't be until he signs a contract.

I actually agree with Lsuredskinman. The popularity of draft day is one of the components that has made the NFL so popular. [/b]
|
No, it isn't. The NFL was already wildly popular. That's WHY the draft has become popular.

What if all of a sudden, all the top picks decided, "I have better things to do". What would the draft be like if they just started announcing the top picks and none of them were there for interviews, etc?[/b]
|
What would it be like? More interesting, probably. How many times do we need to hear "I'm happy to go to City X and I'm excited for the opportunity blah blah blah."

He is about to become an extremely wealthy man thanks to the NFL, I really don't know where he comes off as "above this". I also guarentee that if Reggie Bush pulled this off last year, everyone would be outraged at his selfishnes...but it is ok with Joe Thomas? Talk about double standards.
[/b]

Shouldn't something have to actually happen before we proclaim a double standard?
I just felt like nitpicking a bit.

He's not a piece of property. He's a human. He can do whatever the **** he feels like doing. If he feels like fishing, let him go fishing.
If anything, it proves his dedication. He wants to keep up the tradition he has so bad, that he'll miss out on a once-in-a-lifetime experience for it.
That's the kind of player i'd want on my team. If only you understood what's going on here, you'd want a player like him on your team, too.

I really wish you could explain it to me. From what I have read, him and his dad have been doing this fishing trip every year for quite awhile, they can't bump it up a week? Does his dad have a terminal condition? Can his dad not join him in NY? Can't they cut the trip early and have a party at the house with a film crew?

How many players who are drafted dont show up? I'd all say about all but 10 or so of the 300+ players drafted. JT wants to fall into the catagory of the latter, he isnt getting paid to show up at the draft, he isnt going to be making himself any more money or improving anything for himself. The dude wants to go fishing with his pops and probably drink. He'll find out where he's playing Football the next morning, big deal.

You know it's funny when Joe Thomas is getting more **** for going fishing on draft day than Okoye, CJ, and Adams are getting put together on the weed thread.

Well if he doesn't care, then why should we? We can all just pick up the paper on Monday and see what happened.... but weird thing here, we all care. I doubt I'll even leave the house the whole weekend. Yet here is a guy whose life is going to revolve around the events of the day and he is pretty much oblivious to it.
I am not sure if he gets paid to attend the draft or not. I am pretty sure they are given alot of perks to attend (free suits, phone, jewelry,etc...), not to mention the cost of the trip (for the whole entourage). There are also alot of sponsors and media types that will comp addtional expenses and give you more free merchandise and cash more than likely. Great platform to get your name out and really make some solid business contacts.
The NFL only invites 10 or so people to attend, so that part doesn't really matter.
