This was a topic I got from just general discussion with friends. Thought it would be interesting.
1. Chad Pennington has to rebuild his rapport with Laveranues Coles. They've been apart for two seasons now, and although they were dynamite a few years back, they have to get that going. Last year the Jets sorely lacked a go-to receiver. This year they have a guy that has done it in the past.
2. The offensive line has to keep plowing ahead. Losing Kareem McKenzie was a huge loss. Age is another factor. But the Jets have proven themselves to be ageless during the past few years, with Curtis Martin continuing to play great, so perhaps that same play can rub off on the O-Line
3. The defense needs to keep overachieving. Even though the Jets have a very solid front seven, the secondary is lacking in talent and experience yet somehow managed to keep the opposition from scoring last year. Players like Erik Coleman need to keep playing over their heads.
4. Jon Vilma needs to assert himself as a team leader. Players from the U have shown that they are vocal leaders, when you look at guys like Ray Lewis and Ed Reed, who tend to get the most out of their teammates. It would provide the fire that the Jets need to finally get over the hump against teams like the Patriots and Steelers.
5. Curtis Martin needs to just do whatever it is that he does. The guy is really mindblowing when you think about how well he just keeps doing over the years. If he can keep providing the thread on the ground, the offense can keep ticking.
6. Mike Nugent cannot bust. He was picked too high to struggle. It's my opinion that if he struggles, there will be some questioning in the locker room about the intelligence of the front office.
Players who need to step up: Doug Jolley, Mike Nugent, Dewayne Robertson.
How about your teams?

#1. The running game has to be productive. If for some reason Ben Roethslisberger doesnt have what it takes this year being his second season, the running game has to be strong.
#2. Corners are going to need to step up. Taylor and Coke more importantly, Williams and Townsend are decent, but we know they will compete, it's up to those 2.
#3. The O-line will need to stay healthy, theres not much depth there, and Max Starks will have to step it up, if he can, the line will be excellent.

1. The defense has to play to the calibre that we have come to expect. They cannot break down in the fourth quarter, even if the offense gives them a bad game. Basically, we need the 2000 defense again.
OR
1.b. The offense has to step up to a top 15 offense. If this happens the D is good enough where it is. For the offense to step up that much, we need: A healthy, efficient Oline. A career year from Jamal Lewis and healthy backups. Todd Heap healthy, Derrick Mason and Mike Clayton combined for 200 catches between the three of them. Kyle Boller needs to play 150% better than last year,.

The Steelers running back situation kinda concerns me.
I think Staley, Bettis and Haynes who are all suspect as far as being healthy for the whole season could end up making the running game a non factor if the injury bug should hit hard.
The nightmare scenario is all three of them being out with injuries at the same time leaving Willie Parker to carry the load.
To win it all we obviously have to stay healthy as a team, utilize Heath Miller from the start..........no drop off in production from Ben and for Cowher to take his head out of his *** and coach aggressively in the playoffs.

In three years:
1. Two more solid drafts
2. A stud LT, and good OL depth
3. A top-5 defensive front seven, especially at NT
4. Gary Baxter can't get burned too often, especially for as much $$$ we're paying him
5. Frye needs to excel in the starting role
6. Crennel needs to prove he was born to be a head coach, which I think he was.
