Can someone please explain the mechanics of a player contract in the NFL?

For instance:

Player "A" signs a (5) year contract with team "B". Now, one of three things can happen:
1. The player plays out his contract.
2. The player plays (?) percentage of his contract, then holds out.
3. The team terminates the contract after (?) percent of the players contract has expired.

What purpose do contracts actually serve? Are they just a formality...?!? If NEITHER the player nor the team are actually bound by the contract, why are they needed...?!?

It is very obvious that contracts can not be enforced, so, is there another option...?!?

I am excluding players with injuries or clauses within the contract to negate the document.

Just curious.

I'm kind of sick of this ****. 'Arrington signs a 50 million dollar contract, only 5-10 is guaranteed'.

I'm pretty satisfied with the current state of the NFL (sorta), and having guaranteed contracts as they have in other sports could be either a good or a bad thing.

If I had to pick, I would rather have all contracts be guaranteed. You know what you are getting at what price, and teams would have to really decide if this is a player they want, and what kind of dollars they deserve. More players would end up retiring with the team that drafted them, too.

It would force the Terrell Owens's of the league to shape up or accept one year deals year after year.

I think it would be more competitive if teams had to deal guarenteed contracts as the players would have to play them out.

BUT...

...there is a lot of downside to that also...?!?

I don't like completly guarenteed contracts, then you have players who just don't play but get paid. My poor Pirates are a good example. Signed Derrek Bell. He refused to then play, still had to pay him.

I liek the partially guarenteed. That way the player isn't completly screwed but neither is the team. Of course you have people like Clarett that want no guarenteed money.

I think it would be nice if a player has been on the same team for over 12 consecutive years his salary, or even just a percentage of his salary stops counting towards the salary cap, but only as long as he stays with that team.

This would allow more players to retire with their original teams and end situations like Emmitt with the Cardinals, Bruce Smith with the Redskins, and Jerry Rice with the Raiders/Seahawks.

I doubt this would ever happen but I hate seeing a player that is considered "The Face" of their franchise unceremonialy released for money reasons
