Can someone please explain the mechanics of a player contract in the NFL?
For instance:
Player "A" signs a
(5) year contract with team "B". Now, one of three things can happen:
1. The player plays out his contract.
2. The player plays (?) percentage of his contract, then holds out.
3. The team terminates the contract after (?) percent of the players contract has expired.
What purpose do contracts actually serve? Are they just a formality...?!? If
NEITHER the player nor the team are actually bound by the contract, why are they needed...?!?
It is very obvious that contracts can not be enforced, so, is there another option...?!?
I am excluding players with injuries or clauses within the contract to negate the document.
Just curious.
