Just as you feel “off” when your team has a bye week, at least there are other games to be watched. So WHY must football fans worldwide sit idle, waiting for the big game? Sure, we could do some stuff around the house–repair the toilet that never stops running, change the oil in the car, spend quality time with the lady…. But it’s FOOTBALL season. Sort of. The Sunday before the Super Bowl is like the black hole of the season–nothing to do, no real “news” to report…it’s just “there”. Why is that?
My guess is that the media hopes for some hype and activity–rewind to the Joey Porter/Jerramy Stevens issue last year. I can’t say I was surprised to see that happen. Porter likes to talk, and frankly, these guys were BORED. I’d have to think that once you earn the right to play in the Super Bowl–the game of all games–you want to, well, PLAY. Not make the media rounds, biting your tounge when your are provoked to say something that may just be newsworthy–rewind to the Joey Porter/Jerramy Stevens maylay.
So just what IS the purpose of the off week? Many say that it allows the NFL to hype up the game so much that it’s all you can think about. It will be the ONE event you don’t want to miss. But as football fans, do we really need that reminder? The NFL thinks we do. Pretty sure the media thinks we do, too. But frankly, hearing the same stories, over and over, and over…it’s boring, frankly. And, what it leads to is fans asking “Is the game EVER going to get here?
Believe it or not, there are some newsworthy items happening around the NFL; it just happens that none if it has anything to do with the upcoming Super Bowl.
AFC
Buffalo Bills
The Bills signed free agent Kirk Chambers, to expand their depth in the already-stretched thin offensive line. A sixth-round pick of the Cleveland Browns in 2004, Chambers appeared in 21 games in 2004 and 2005, after being a four-year starter at left tackle in college at Stanford.
Miami DolphinsOn January 24, 2007. the Dolphins named Terry Robiskie as their wide receivers coach and Brett Maxie as the safeties coach. Dom Capers and Keith Armstrong, who were both staff members in the 2006 season, signed contract extensions. They were each handed new titles as well. Capers will now be the Dolphins’ defensive coordinator, and Armstrong will take on the role of special teams coordinator.
New York Jets
The Jets have signed guard Adrien Clarke to a Reserve/Future contract. Clarke, was a 7th round pick from Ohio State in 2004 NFL Draft. He started 4 games for the Eagles in 2005, active in a total of 13 games.
Cleveland Browns
The Browns named Dave Atkins as their new senior offensive assistant coach, Anthony Lynn as the running backs coach, and Rip Scherer as the new assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach. Will it make a difference? Probably not.
Pittsburgh Steelers
The end of an era. Cowher has resigned, and to prove just about everyone wrong, they brought in Mike Tomlin. The players were shocked. The fans were shocked. The frontrunner was Russ Grimm, hands down. But give credit where credit is due–the Rooney’s have a method when choosing head coaches–this is their third, since 1969. Will he have what it takes? He’s handled himself like a champ with the media, but the true story won’t be told until he makes his presence felt in the locker room.
Oakland Raiders
Oakland has hired 15-year-old Lane Kiffin as their new head coach. He’s signed a five-year deal, taking over for the fired Art Shell.
NFC
Dallas Cowboys
The Tuna has stepped down (again), and the search is on for a new head coach. It’ll be tough to find someone to control TO and his antics, but it looks as though Dallas is wasting no time interviewing for the vacancy. To date, six potential successors have been interviewed, with Gary Gibbs being the latest candidate. Gibbs was the Cowboys’ linebackers coach from 2002-05, before leaving for the Saints as the defensive coodinator.
Philadelphia Eagles
According to recent reports from ProFootballTalk.com, McNabb is unhappy in Philly. ProFootballTalk.com notes, “As we hear it, McNabb was at some point determined to be behind schedule in his recovery from season-ending surgery to repair the injury that he suffered against the Titans. And McNabb has, on at least one occasion, blamed the delay on well-respected trainer Rick Burkholder.” We’ll see what comes of that…but I bet it ain’t good.
Atlanta Falcons
No weed in Mike’s water bottle…
