Default Bolts Release 3 McCree/Neal/Olivea

SAN DIEGO—The San Diego Chargers have released safety Marlon McCree as they prepare to enter free agency.
The move was confirmed by a person with knowledge of the situation, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the team has yet to announce the move. That's expected to happen when general manager A.J. Smith meets with the media this afternoon.

McCree is being released in part to allow safety Eric Weddle to move into the starting lineup.

McCree is probably best remembered for fumbling a fourth-down interception that gave the New England Patriots new life in a playoff win over the Chargers after the 2006 season.

McCree is expected to have a strong market for his services, just like he did when he joined the Chargers two seasons ago.

i also heard Lorenzo Neal and Shane Olivea were released as well but i can find a link yet. the release of Olivea is strange to me though. i understand losing your job, but how do you go from a 7th round draft pick, to the starting RT as a rook, make the All ESPN Rookie team, start the next year and the year after that, lose your job, and then your team just like that?

strange...

The expected happened today, as the Chargers released fullback Lorenzo Neal and free safety Marlon McCree.

In a somewhat surprising move, offensive tackle Shane Olivea was released as well.

Neal, a three-time Pro Bowler in his five seasons in San Diego, had been on the trading block for a week. There were no takers, and the 37-year old he was let go with three seasons remaining on his contract.

McCree, who will be replaced in the starting lineup by Eric Weddle, had been expected to released for some time as well. He also was signed through 2010.

It was thought that Olivea, who lost his starting job at right tackle midseason and fell out of favor with the coaching staff over his work ethic and commitment, would be given another year to get back in the good standing and perhaps earn back his job.

Hmmm.. I think the pats should make a run for Mcree, they could definetly use some help in the secondary. I'm surprised they cut Neal. He's a huge + for the run game, he's an amazing blocker.

but he is injured and 37 years old. He could still go back to them, though.

Yeah, but he is a shoe in for the hall of fame. He's arguably the best blocking fullback of his era.
