The Jaguars have given three-time Pro Bowler Marcus Stroud permission to seek a trade, according to his agent Drew Rosenhaus, who discussed the situation Thursday on ESPN’s First Take.
To replace Stroud, the club is in discussions with Detroit to make a trade for defensive tackle Shaun Rogers, according to a league source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because such moves can’t officially be transacted until today – the start of the league’s new year.
Coming off microfracture surgery on his right ankle in 2006, Stroud played in nine games last season and posted 35 tackles, three sacks and recovered a fumble before he was placed on injured reserve on Dec. 12.
Speculation has swirled since the 2007 season that Stroud was unhappy in Jacksonville and wanted out, according to several team sources who asked not to be identified because of the sensitivity of the situation. The five-year, $31.5 million contract Stroud signed in 2005 (which will pay him $5 million this season) is not considered a factor in the team’s decision to allow him to seek a trade.
Last week at the NFL Combine, Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio said that none of the players on the roster currently carry a salary that is prohibitive to the team’s plans. In addition, Del Rio said that through discussions with team doctors, Stroud has the most positive prognosis for a full recovery of all the players suffering an injury last season.
Rogers, meanwhile, is rumored to be a part of several trade discussions around the NFL that involve the Lions talking to Denver, the New York Jets and other teams, including the Jags. Detroit is reportedly seeking a second- or third-round pick as compensation.
The Lions, reportedly, plan to continue negotiating until today for a deal suitable enough to move Rogers, who is due a $1 million roster bonus on Saturday. Reports also indicate that Detroit plans on paying Rogers the bonus even if trade talks stall before the day the bonus is due.
