Default Retirement no longer in plans for Fox's Terry Bradshaw

Retirement no longer in plans for Fox's Terry Bradshaw
Saturday, June 28th 2008, 8:57 PM

In January, during the run-up to the Giants-Patriots Super Bowl, Fox's Terry Bradshaw said he was nearing the end of his television career.

Bradshaw said he would retire when his Fox "NFL Sunday" contract expires. "I see the energy and the enthusiasm these young guys (who get into broadcasting) have and I think it's time to hang it up," Bradshaw said.

Now, with some down time, and a chance to reflect while distancing himself from the regular-season grind, Bradshaw has changed his mind.

"I'm going to do it (the Fox pregame) as long as I can. I don't want to retire," Bradshaw told me. "I just see too many people retire and say, ‘I'm going to take off, travel, spend time with my family' and they are just miserable. They end up dying. People who work and stay active, and like what they are doing, live longer. I look forward to doing the show."

The arrival of Michael Strahan, Bradshaw said, will freshen up the current cast whose core (Bradshaw, Howie Long, Jimmy Johnson) has been together for most of the program's 14-year run, not counting the three years Johnson missed coaching the Dolphins.

"The fear for a network is the viewer gets tired of you," Bradshaw said. "Not that you lost any credibility, but they get tired of you. That's why it's good having Michael come in. It adds a new wrinkle to the show."

Meanwhile, Bradshaw said he would be up for interviewing Tom Coughlin. Bradshaw once called for Coughlin's dismissal. He also once referred to the coach (in 2004) as "mean," "hateful" and a "jerk."

"I'd love to (interview Coughlin). I'd love to," Bradshaw said. "I was past it (the Coughlin controversy) when it happened. He wasn't, but Coughlin and I are fine. You know that whole Coughlin thing was caused by a Giant (actually it was Strahan when he complained about Coughlin's "rules").

"That's what stirred me up," Bradshaw said. "But there are coaches who are just like players. If you are critical of them you will get nothing."

So, now that Bradshaw ain't splitting, he'll have plenty of time to interview the Giants coach. Maybe Strahan can set it up.
