Default Football newbies wants to learn

Hey guys, first post!

This may sound like a “questionnaire” (ok, maybe it is), but I’m relatively new to football, and I’m trying to learn the game as much as possible before the 2009 season starts up.

1. How many trades are there in a season? I watch a lot of baseball and hockey. Do trades compare?

2. If you don’t live in a city that has an NFL team, who’s your favourite team and why? I live in Toronto, but I must admit, I’m not much of a Bills fan.

3. Give me your top 10 players of all time.

4. Who’s the greatest team ever? The worst?

5. Who are your Super Bowl picks for 2010?

6. Is football your favourite sport? Why?

7. I get the impression that, unlike most sports, football is more about the teams than the players. Is this a fair assumption? For example, could you name more baseball players than football players?

8. What would you say is the fastest way to learn the sport? Obviously, watching it is the best way. What are some good websites?

9. Give me your top 5 greatest football moments ever (ie “The Catch”).

Can't think of a #10 right now... I'll ask some more questions as I think of them! Lol Thanks for your help, everyone…

Hey guys, first post!

This may sound like a “questionnaire” (ok, maybe it is), but I’m relatively new to football, and I’m trying to learn the game as much as possible before the 2009 season starts up.

Maybe like three during the season, and quite a bit more around the draft.

2. If you don’t live in a city that has an NFL team, who’s your favourite team and why? I live in Toronto, but I must admit, I’m not much of a Bills fan.

What ever team you feel like you have a personal connection with, I live in Chicago and the Bears are my team but I like Jacksonville a lot because I like the area so much.

3. Give me your top 10 players of all time.

1. Walter Payotn
2. Mike Singletary
3. Bill George
4. Dick Butkus
5. Richard Dent
6. Gary Fencik
7. Steve Young
8. Gale Sayers
9. Jerry Rice
10. Fred Taylor

4. Who’s the greatest team ever? The worst?

Very sujectable and probably bias but I can't go against the '85 Bears, worst the Packers of the '70s and '80s.

5. Who are your Super Bowl picks for 2010?

Jacksonville and Philadelphia
6. Is football your favorite sport? Why?

Yes and I couldn't tell you.

7. I get the impression that, unlike most sports, football is more about the teams than the players. Is this a fair assumption? For example, could you name more baseball players than football players?

Yes because in football most of the time even if you have a great player and a bunch of scrubs around him the aren't going to be very good you need a good core of players. And I could probably name more football players than I could baseball players but I follow football more closely that I do baseball.

8. What would you say is the fastest way to learn the sport? Obviously, watching it is the best way. What are some good websites?

On websites like this and others, watching it and taking constructive criticism is the most helpful tool in learning at least in my opinion.

9. Give me your top 5 greatest football moments ever (ie “The Catch”).

1. '85 Bears
2. Payton breaking the single game rushing record
3. My first game at Soldier field in 1982 against the Packers
4. The NFC Championship game two years ago
5. Every time the Bears beat the Packers

Not very many during the season usually involving bench players if there are.

2. If you don’t live in a city that has an NFL team, who’s your favourite team and why? I live in Toronto, but I must admit, I’m not much of a Bills fan.

I do live in an NFL city now. Grew up in Grand Rapids so became a Bears fan growing up.

3. Give me your top 10 players of all time.

Walter Payton
Gale Sayers
Dick Butkus
Lawrence Taylor
Joe Montana
Jerry Rice
Barry Sanders
Reggie White
Richard Dent
Jack Lambert

4. Who’s the greatest team ever? The worst?

Greatest: 85 Bears Worst: 1976 Bucs
5. Who are your Super Bowl picks for 2010?

Jacksonville and Dallas

6. Is football your favourite sport? Why?

Football is my favorite sport due to the almsot constant action and physical play

7. I get the impression that, unlike most sports, football is more about the teams than the players. Is this a fair assumption? For example, could you name more baseball players than football players?

I could probably name more football players than baseball. But then again an NFL roster has more than 2x as many players as a MLB roster.

8. What would you say is the fastest way to learn the sport? Obviously, watching it is the best way. What are some good websites?

You probably learn some of the rules from somewhere like Wikepedia.

9. Give me your top 5 greatest football moments ever (ie “The Catch”).

The Catch
The Blizzard Bowl
The Fog Bowl
Desmond Howards return in the SB
The Rams stopping the Titans on the 1 yd line in the SB

No no no!!! The absolute best way to learn football, the ins and outs, the rules and players - everything is.............. playing Madden or other video games for playstation or XBox. You get wooped at the start but soon realize the rules. I actually loved playing the video game before I had an appreciation for the actual sport.

The game made me crave football and I slowly started to watch. After betting a couple bucks on proline you really start to realize what went wrong the previous week. It makes it more interesting plus you pay attention a hell of a lot more.

Thanks for the questions. I'm sure many people can take something from this thread.
