ALAMEDA - A business management major at Cal, Raiders cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha managed his business quite nicely last year. Now may be time for a mathematics brush up.
The eight interceptions he stole vaulted him into the spotlight and slammed shut the stigma of having played 47 games over the previous three years without even one.
But those are just numbers. Those eight picks came with just two wins by the team and if those numbers were to be turned around -- eight wins and two interceptions -- it would settle better.
"I never come into a season with numbers ... as goals," he said Thursday after going through a voluntary Raiders practice. "I've been able to improve each year I've been in the league. I'll know whether or not I got better when this season comes up. But as far as a team, it's (about) winning games. That's our goal."
But there is more math on the horizon this season for Asomugha. At the conclusion of the 2007 campaign, he will have the option to void his contract and become a free agent.
What that could mean to him hasn't escaped notice. Consider the $80 million free agent contract Nate Clements signed with the 49ers a few weeks ago -- the one that made him the richest defensive player in the league, the one that came with a $22 million guarantee.
It made Asomugha swallow hard.
