Default Surgery puts Walter out for 4-6 weeks

Surgery puts Walter out for 4-6 weeks

Raiders quarterback Andrew Walter had another offseason setback, this time in the form of arthroscopic surgery on a lingering knee injury.

Walter was scoped Tuesday and will be out four to six weeks, Raiders coach Lane Kiffin said after practice Wednesday. Offseason workouts end next week, so Walter won't be on the field again until training camp begins July 27 in Napa.

Not good news for the third-year player who started organized team activities as the No. 1 quarterback in March, only to watch the Raiders draft JaMarcus Russell with the No. 1 overall pick and then trade for Josh McCown from the Lions in a single late-April weekend.

"What's good for him is he had a head start," Kiffin said. "He was ahead of the other two guys because he was here first and Josh and JaMarcus came later. So, I guess maybe it evens it out that way."

Little has gone right for Walter since the Raiders drafted him from Arizona State in 2005.

He lingered on the third team as a rookie and did not play. Last year, he went 2-6 as a starter for the NFL's worst offense, throwing 13 interceptions and three touchdowns while getting sacked 46 times.

Walter was not at practice Wednesday and was unavailable for comment.

According to Kiffin, who did not know which knee required surgery, Walter hurt his knee during last year's preseason but played through it. He reported the injury to the team staff two weeks ago.

"It was nothing that affected how he was playing," Kiffin said. "In his mind, he could feel it a little bit but it was nothing we could see.

"It was just something he felt he needed to get done to get his mind right about it and this was the time to do it. I wouldn't say he's going to fall behind because he's really only to miss (six workouts)."

His absence allowed McCown and Russell to split first-team snaps; Kiffin was dividing playing time by three before Walter got hurt.
