Default Bill Walsh Visits Raider Mini Camp

ALAMEDA -- The voices of defensive coordinator Rob Ryan and defensive line coach Keith Millard drown out that of head coach Lane Kiffin. Assistant coaches chase players back to the huddle, while Kiffin stands off to the side, overseeing practice.
There isn't much about Kiffin that screams out that he is the Raiders coach, including his run-of-the-mill sweatpants, athletic shirt and visor. He keeps his demeanor in check at all times, at least when media sorts are within view.

Yet, everyone has their triggers. The prospect of having lunch with former 49ers coach Bill Walsh on Wednesday afternoon jolted Kiffin from his comfort zone and had him in a giddy mood.

"What can't you get out of that?" Kiffin said when asked what could be gleaned from a meeting with Walsh.

Walsh spent the better part of 90 minutes watching Kiffin put the Raiders through their paces on the third and final day of a minicamp at the team's facility. That is, when he wasn't being approached by Raiders players, coaches and front-office people for handshakes, photos and a few words of wisdom.

At one point, offensive coordinator Greg Knapp broke from practice so that he could spend a few minutes with Walsh and get his picture taken with the NFL icon.

Walsh is battling leukemia so he made his way around the practice fields as a passenger in a golf cart. Even so, every now and then he got up and walked around to greet a visitor, pose for a photo or just get closer to a familiar face.
