Raiders safety Jarrod Cooper was suspended for the first four games of the regular season Friday for violating the league's policy on anabolic steroids and related substances.
Cooper has spent the past three seasons with the Raiders after an incident-marred career with the Carolina Panthers. He signed with the Raiders midway through the 2004 season shortly after the Panthers released him, in large part, because of his checkered past.
He was charged twice in a three-year span for driving while impaired while with the Panthers. The NFL suspended him for four games and docked him six weeks' salary for violating the league's substance abuse policy as a result of his second DWI arrest Sept. 16, 2003.
This latest suspension takes effect Sept. 1. He is eligible to return to the Raiders' active roster Oct. 1, one day after they play the Miami Dolphins in their fourth game.
Cooper won't be paid for the four games he is scheduled to miss. He will lose $270,588 of his $1.15 million base salary.
Another violation would result in Cooper's receiving at least a one-year suspension, per league guidelines for repeat offenders.
