Raiders Coach Lane Kiffin is prepared to inform Daunte Culpepper and Josh McCown which of them will start at quarterback in the season opener Sept. 9.
Others are going to have to wait longer. Perhaps until the day before the game, Kiffin said in a conference call Friday. He said he wants to keep the Detroit Lions in the dark, forcing them to plan for both quarterbacks.
"That could definitely be part of it," Kiffin said.
McCown played for the Lions last season, so they should have a pretty good handle on what he's capable of doing. Just the same, Kiffin isn't eager to inform the masses of his decision.
Kiffin was busy Friday informing players who won't be on the 53-man roster, which the team will announce today. The announcement could include a surprise or two if Kiffin's first seven months on the job are any indication.
"Somebody told me that if you researched the roster moves from the day we got here, there is not a team close to making as many roster moves as we've made," Kiffin said, "and that has paid off for us. It has paid off in people feeling the pressure and the competition, knowing jobs weren't safe around here. That has made us better."
Andrew Walter was part of the quarterback competition until Monday. The significant playing time he received in Oakland's first three exhibitions allowed other teams to see if he is capable of helping them.
