Raiders make DL Kelly $50.5 million man
Quote:
Raiders re-signed DL Tommy Kelly to a seven-year, $50.5 million contract. The deal includes $18.125 in guarantees and $25.125 million in the first three years.
He's now the highest-paid tackle in the NFL. Kelly, who can play every spot on the defensive line, is scheduled to replace Warren Sapp at the three technique this year. It's a shock a former undrafted player coming off reconstructive knee surgery would get a contract like this, but Kelly was too valuable for Oakland to let walk. This re-sets the bar for Albert Haynesworth, Corey Williams, and eventually Vince Wilfork to get new deals. Feb. 28 - 2:16 pm et

I like this move albeit a bit pricy.
I think kelly will be an all pro one day and he provides that gap penetration we sorely missed inside the tackles last year.
We still need more help upfront on defense.
This was a good start.

If by good start you mean ridiculous idiocy I agree completely. Giving 50 mill to a guy that hasn't even played a full season at DT. Givng 50 mill to a guy who hasn't proved he can even be a full time DT?
I think it might be time to take Al Davis out back and give his the Old Yeller....

That depends on how the contract was structured.
I remember when we drafted Nnamdi and that was called lunacy too yet Al knew better than the pundits.
Kelly is a beast and moving to DE last year was ahuge reason we struggled vs. the run since we didnt get any penetration inside to force ball carriers to run loaterally where we could use our speed at LB to make plays. Everybody moans about our LBs not being able to shed blocks but when you have a DL in your face, its harder than if you dont.
Im holding off on judgment on this one but I know DT wasnt a spot we could afford to lose a player.
But lay off the tired old Als senile line.
Thats lame.
Would you rather he was more like Bill Bidwell?
He got us to a SB just 5 years ago when he opened his wallet.
I trust the only guy who has gone to SBs in 4 decades with 4 different coaches.
