MLS officials wrap up first exploratory visit to Carolinas

On the invitation of NASL second-division side Carolina RailHawks, Major League Soccer officials made their first formal exploratory visit on Thursday to the area of the Carolinas known as the Triangle — North Carolina cities Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill.

"It was a great day," RailHawks president Curt Johnson told MLSsoccer.com. "We were able to shine a light on the professional game here in the Triangle and have an open, honest discussion about the future."

That discussion included MLS president Mark Abbott, NASL commissioner David Downs and owner representative Aaron Davidson, business and political leaders, as well as RailHawks season-ticket holders and general soccer fans.

The day-long series of meetings and events, which included a fan Q&A and a media roundtable, was organized by the local NASL club with the intent of sparking a discussion about the future of the sport in the Carolinas and to outline the steps necessary to grow the game.

Sacramento reportedly lines up expansion bid
California capital Sacramento makes the case for MLS club

all the expansion talk about a potential second MLS team in New York City, prepare for plenty of speculation about a fourth in California.

A report this morning reveals that former California Assembly Speaker Fabian Núñez, who sits on the US Soccer Federation board, is exploring the possibility of landing an MLS franchise for Sacramento, specifically the suburb of Elk Grove.

"I wouldn't characterize it as a long shot, but it's an endeavor that's in its infancy," said Sacramento attorney thingy Hyde, who is one of Núñez’s partners and worked on bringing MLS to Sacramento before the league’s launch in 1996. "I think Elk Grove is probably a really good spot for soccer."

Default 100th Anniversary Special Copa America

No World Cup?

There's always Copa Panamericana

Consensus is that the US was robbed of the 2022 World Cup. Well, here comes the next best thing. And it even comes six years earlier!

The president of the Ecuadorean soccer federation, whose brother is on the CONMEBOL executive committee, told Mexican media that the USA iis to host the special 2016 Copa América in celebration of the South American confederation's 100-year anniversary - Copa Panamericana.

Hopefully we can organize a big event, because we have 100 years and we want to celebrate big,". Hawit, however would prefer the competition to be hosted in United States for financial reasons stating that "the market is in the United States, the stadiums are in the United States, the people are in the United States. The study that we have made [shows] that everything’s in the United States."

CONCACAF officially commented on the competition in July 2012, CONCACAF President Jeffrey Webb commented that there was much organizing to be done. Chiriboga noted that the special edition of the Copa América would feature 16 teams: 10 from South America and six from CONCACAF. Apparently there would be a qualification process to determine the six CONCACAF nations. If US fans thought that was big news, the Ecuadorean chief also mentioned that the US would likely get an inivitation to participate in the 2015 Copa América in Brazil.

At the USL annual general meeting, the United Soccer Leagues informed its member clubs of a proposed agreement with Major League Soccer that would provide for an integrated third division/MLS reserve league. Some interplay is expected to begin in 2013, with full integration of the plan coming in 2014.

The details as understood are:

1. If an MLS city has a USLPRO team nearby, MLS will provide 5 players and pay their salary.

2. If there’s no USLPRO team, the MLS reserve side will become a new, permanent team in USLPRO.

3. All USLPRO teams will have an MLS affiliate.

It’s unclear at this point how far along the proposal is, though separate sources have confirmed that discussions are ongoing.

MLS unveils preliminary list of Generation adidas signings

Major League Soccer on Thursday unveiled its preliminary list of college underclassmen signings who have penned Generation adidas contracts with the league and will be eligible for selection in the 2013 SuperDraft on Jan. 17 at the NSCAA Convention in Indianapolis.

Defenders Walker Zimmerman (Furman) and Andrew Farrell (Louisville) join Mikey Lopez (University of North Carolina) and forward Jason Johnson (Virginia Commonwealth University) as the first set of players to join the league before exhausting their college eligibility. All four players will participate in the 2013 MLS Player Combine, which kicks off next Friday, Jan. 11.
