Default Smith makes some contact

L.J. Smith took another step in his bid to return from sports hernia surgery yesterday.

For the first time since the Eagles opened training camp, the veteran tight end participated in a full contact scrimmage during the morning workout at Lehigh University.

He considered it a major step in his recovery from the surgery that prevented him from participating in the Eagles' June minicamps back in Philadelphia.

"It felt good," Smith said. "I'm a little out of shape. Physically, I can do it, but my wind isn't completely there yet."

Smith caught two passes during the scrimmage, but he didn't participate in a second scrimmage later in the morning practice.

"The best part of practice is when we scrimmage," Smith said. "Everything else is kind of a drag."

That's why Smith is hoping he can continue to work in the scrimmages for the remainder of training camp at Lehigh.

Smith had surgery May 1 to repair a sports hernia, an injury that ended the seasons of quarterback Donovan McNabb and punter Dirk Johnson two years ago.

Smith said he didn't know if he would play in Monday night's exhibition opener against the Baltimore Ravens.

"I think that'll be a game-day decision," Smith said.
