He's healthy now. He's just not in shape.
Tight end L.J. Smith, who underwent sports hernia surgery on May 31, participated in full-contact practice yesterday for the first time.
It just so happened I picked the hottest day of camp to come back, he said with a smile.
Smith caught a couple passes, absorbed a couple hits, made a few blocks and looked comfortable while participating in all aspects of yesterday's morning two-hour practice.
It felt good, Smith said. I'm just a little out of shape. I haven't really done anything since the (April) minicamp. Physically, I can do it. My wind is just a little down.
Smith, who has 26 touchdown catches in four seasons, is entering the final year of his five-year rookie contract. This is a critical season for Smith, who will be a coveted free agent if he reaches the open market.
I've done what I can do rehabbing, Smith said. But you can't simulate this 90-degree weather, 90-degree humidity working out. The best thing I can do is go 100 miles per hour and get right back into it.
Smith isn't sure if he'll play in the preseason opener against the Ravens in Baltimore Monday night, but barring a setback he'll almost certainly play in the second game, against the Panthers at the Linc a week from Friday.
The Eagles open the regular season in 4 1/2 weeks against the Packers at Lambeau Field in Green Bay.
I'll definitely be in shape by the time the season comes, Smith said. The best way to get back in shape is to just go right into it. And hopefully it doesn't hurt too much.
Smith said he still experiences soreness in the area of the surgery, but he said he's not concerned.
That's to be expected, he said.
