excerpt:
Jeremiah Trotter has had a whirlwind career in Philadelphia -- from a little-used rookie to a young Pro Bowl player to a free agent exodus to a reserve stint to his current role, as a Pro Bowl-lcaliber veteran who is one of the unquestionable leaders in the Eagles locker room.
Entering training camp, there are few positions on the Eagles roster more secure than middle linebacker, where No. 54 patrols the middle of the defense with the talent of an All-Pro and the motivation of a rookie free agent. Trotter is ever-passionate; his axe-chopping attitude sets the tone for the Eagles defense.
During the past two seasons, few middle linebackers in the NFL have stood out more than Trotter. In 2004, he earned a Pro Bowl appearance despite starting only half the season. He followed it up with a 2005 Pro Bowl spot, one of the few bright spots of last season.
Trotter knows the defense and has the full confidence of his coaching staff. For him, training camp will be more a matter of staying healthy and keeping the team's morale where it needs to be as a leader.
"It's major. It's a must," Trotter said earlier this spring. "Any organization, whether it's business or sports, has to have great chemistry. It's good when guys enjoy coming to work. Work should be fun, I think."
The Eagles have a comfortable situation behind Trotter, too. Mark Simoneau, a jack-of-all-trades linebacker for the Eagles the past three seasons, is Trotter's backup and can slide to the outside as well. Simoneau is fast, smart and unselfish, willing to contribute on special teams and play wherever the Eagles need him.
