It's an esoteric question, but an important one if you're Koy Detmer or Jeff Garcia. Or even if you're David Akers.
Assuming Timmy Chang doesn't set the world ablaze in the final two preseason games, unexpectedly snatching Detmer's roster spot, the Eagles' coaching staff will have a decision to make when the season opener arrives Sept. 10 at Houston.
Since he started holding for Akers in 2000, Detmer has been the Eagles' second quarterback on game day. The third quarterback isn't part of the 45-man active roster and can't enter the game until No. 1 and No. 2 have played. Once No. 3 takes a snap, Nos. 1 and 2 are done for the day. So if you're a QB and you're going to hold, you can't be No. 3.
This year, though, the Eagles have tried to upgrade their quarterback options by bringing in 36-year-old, three-time Pro Bowler Jeff Garcia. Garcia hasn't been practicing as a holder. Punter Dirk Johnson has been Detmer's competition there.
