The wind was gusting from left to right, and the goalpost was 52 yards away. This was the toughest test yet for Dirk Johnson.
“That wasn't an easy kick,” David Akers said. “It was a windy night, and Dirk had to make a pretty good adjustment with his lean on that one, and he did it. He knew exactly what I needed. That was the best rhythm we've had on a kick yet.”
It looked like just another long field goal from Akers, who is one of the best in the history of the game. In was more than that. It was another big step for Johnson, who may replace Koy Detmer as Akers' personal holder.
Johnson, the Eagles' punter, has progressed to the point where Akers trusts him nearly as much as Detmer to hold for field goal attempts.
