Honestly, Walker was one guy we were looking to give up this year. We were horrible in run support and Walker wasn't any help there. In a rotation where he's not on the field every play, he might do well, but please don't expect great things out of him. It would not have surprised me, if he was cut sometime this year had we kept him. Maybe a change might be good for him.

I doubt we would have cut him. He wasn't a huge cap hit and he was still productive. Definitely one of our better DT's and a capable starter elsewhere

Maybe not, but he was expendable after the signing of Reagor and to boot with Patterson and Bunkley our two first round DT on the roster. We could have kept him, but I had a feeling even before the Reagor signing that going into this off season we wouldn't see Darwin back in an Eagles uniform.
Don't get me wrong, he's solid at DT, but I wanted to make the point of not expecting him to be anything more than a capable solid starter. He did lack in run support last season quite a bit, but then again that was also our D'Line's fault also. I'm just really excited to have Spikes on the roster, it's going to be one hell of a year I hope!
I just can't stop gushing over this team. If Bunkley can show us all why we drafted him last year...this team is Super Bowl quality, right now.
This move turns Trotter into a two-down LB (if that), and opens Gaither up to roam more.
Likely, it'll be a situation where Dhani and Chris Gocong will sort of "platoon" at SAM, depending on TC performance. Trotter plays the MIKE on 1st and 2nd downs (or in run situations), Spikes starts at WILL, and slides to the middle on pass situations, when Gaither plays the WILL. McCoy and probably Daniels (or a draft pick) provide depth.
Or you can do more of a hybrid 3-4 type, with Kearse/Cole rotating in the outside "joker" position (though Kearse is ideal for it), with Gaither/Trotter/Spikes/Kearse, and a DL rotation of Howard/Bunkley/Cole...

if things work out for both oue teams with the moves they've made it may well be a battle of the birds for the super bowl.
My only problem with it is that Spikes is a FA at the end of the year. He has an option and, considering what the FA market has been, he's probably looking for one last payday before he retires and, with the way the Eagles value LB's, id be suprised if he's here after next year.
Im assuming the conditional pick is based on whether we extend him or not which means, next year this time, we'll be in the same situation as we were with Stallworth. If we have a SB ring, than its definately worth it. If not.....well..............who knows.
Overall though i think its a great deal. I hate Dhani Jones and wouldnt mind trading him. I mean, we got a conditional 7th for Freddie Milons a few years ago. Im sure we could get a guaranteed 6th or 7th for Jones.
That would give us a LB corp of:
Trotter: 2-down MLB
Gaither: Starting WILL
Mccoy: nickel LB
Gocong: Joker
Spikes: Starting SAM
Roper: ST's
Daniels: ST's/nickel LB
I have no problem with that LB corp. Now, if we add Desmond Bishop in the draft.....i'll be ecstatic.

Don't worry about Spikes' contract status. It's a team option for next year at $5 million. It's the team's choice, but if they exercise the option, he's not an FA until '09.
