Default Eagles' owner stands by his coach

Ashley Fox | Eagles' owner stands by his coach
By Ashley Fox
Inquirer Sports Columnist

Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie is not going to fire head coach Andy Reid. Not now. Not when the season is over. Probably not any time this decade. It's just not going to happen.

Lurie reluctantly addressed the issue of his embattled coach yesterday during a break from the National Football League's fall meeting, held at a Center City hotel. He first declined to address "team" issues, but when pressed, Lurie left no doubt how he felt about Reid, who is in his ninth year with the Eagles.

"I think we have a great coach, great coaching staff, excellent leadership," Lurie said. "We were 5-6 last year, we lost our starting quarterback, and almost made it to the championship game. He's one of the truly best coaches, and if you interviewed the 31 other owners and Andy was on the market, many would be lining up, so . . ."

So? So that means Reid should stay in Philadelphia, no matter what?

"Either you support your football people or you don't," Lurie said. "And I do."

In an industry that chews up and spits out just about everyone who doesn't have an ownership stake in a team, Lurie's approach is admirable. An owner with a herky-jerky management style - see Snyder, Daniel - can be maddeningly destructive.

I'm not! The way Andy has coached this year he needs to go and IMO if/when we dont make the playoffs either McNabb or Reid is gone.

I think their is a very good chance Reid will not be the Eagles coach next year. But I think its gonna family problems and not their record that is gonna do it

Ok, maybe not ALL the blame (I really wasnt meaning 100%) but I would say the majority of it falls on him (Reid) and the coaching staff.

He's evolved into this over time, and it's getting worse. When he first came and years after he was more run oriented, he was a LOT more balanced. Now (the past 3 years specifically) he has fallen in love with the pass, so much that he even puts a QB who he knows is about 70-75% healthy back there, that just cant happen! The other thing is, is that it isnt even like these bad decisions are ones you can really argue the other way for. Putting McNabb back there in that health is just stupid, plain and simple. Leaving Justice out there alone on Osi and then saying "I really didnt have a back up plan" in the post game is just stupid Letting Reid field the punt in the GB game KNOWING he has NEVER recieved a punt and having Westbrook there is just stupid! My point is, is these mistakes were not being made before. Before, he was the guy that was "ahead of the pace"..this stuff just didnt happen before and I really think his outside life has effected his ability to do his job effectively.

you do have some good points but if you think about it we would be 4-2 if it wasent for the special teams mistake and the eagles D chokeing against the bears

I can not put that GB game on the special teams for what I just mentioned in the above. That is a HUGE Reid error, HUGE!!

The D choking IMO also falls on the coaching staff too. Jim Johnson is another one who has lost it. The D is far more talented then even they have played IMO.
