Default Big Ben, Cowher had problems

Steelers Notebook: Big Ben, Cowher had problems
Saturday, April 21, 2007

By Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Ben Roethlisberger blurted the worst-kept secret around the Steelers into the open yesterday: He and coach Bill Cowher did not quite see eye to eye.

"Our relationship wasn't great because he was here before I got here and I was just a young kid," Roethlisberger said yesterday.

The most glaring instance of the strain on that relationship came in 2005 when Cowher became aware that his young quarterback was riding a motorcycle without wearing a helmet. Cowher talked to him and advised him to be responsible and wear one. That same day, Roethlisberger told the media he would continue to ride without a helmet.

Other instances occurred when the coach sharply disagreed publicly with Roethlisberger that he had played the AFC championship game in his rookie season with broken toes. There were other disagreements over perceived injuries that caused frustration for Cowher.

Roethlisberger hopes to get off to a better start with new coach Mike Tomlin.

"Coach Tomlin and I are rookies together in a sense, so I think we will have a better relationship,'' Roethlisberger said.

Big Ben is overrated. Yeah that's right you heard me correctly. So what he won a Super Bowl. He won because he was protected by a potent running game that opened up the passing game and he didn't mess things up sort of like Trent Dilfer did when they rode the Ravens defense to the championship. Cowher and Big Ben didn't have problems. The problem was Cowher put Big Ben in after he nearly got killed in a motorcycle accident. Cowher sacrificed the season worrying about Big Ben's confidence when he should've let veteran Charlie Batch be the QB last year. There wouldn't be a QB controversy Batch is old, Ben is young. Batch is not the future or the franchise, but they were winning with him. Ben is young enough to sit a season but no they let him play when he missed camp and was hurt and lost games. Also, without Bettis the run game was not as good. The Steelers believed all the press that Big Ben is so good and tried to ride his arm and lost. Big Ben is good and will get better but he hasn't arrived just yet ( he has the potential to be another Terry Bradshaw). So if the Steelers want to win they better stay a run 1st team and Big ben can rebound from last season. Last year he was so awful and I needed a fantasy QB and couldn't pick him. Check his stats. Big Ben got a ways to go.

Well of course Big Ben and Cowher had problems. Isn't there a rule saying keep sexual relationships and work seperate. They should've known...
