SportingNews.com - NFL - Steelers Team Report
excerpt:
RB Carey Davis, a first-year free agent, enhanced his bid to make the team with his performance against the Saints, rushing for 68 yards on seven carries with the aid of a 56-yard run in the second half. Davis has done it all in his first two weeks -- run, catch and block -- and the coaches like what they see. He will get more playing time. He is competing with veterans Kevan Barlow and Verron Haynes and first-year free agent Gary Russell for two of the four running back spots. ...
Offensive coordinator Bruce Arians wants to work on the no-huddle offense and will probably break it out soon in one of the preseason games. The Steelers also used it last season in the preseason, coincidentally against the Vikings when Mike Tomlin was their defensive coordinator, but they used it sparingly, if at all, in the regular season. Arians has given QB Ben Roethlisberger more freedom with some of the play-calling and pass protections this season.
NEWCOMER REPORT: RT Willie Colon, a fourth-round pick in 2006, is getting his turn with the first-team offense in his bid to unset Max Starks as the starter. Colon is tough and aggressive and impressed the coaches last year when he started the final two games. At 340 pounds, Colon has a good punch and uses good technique in pass protection. But he needs to develop his run blocking.
