I don't hate Reed at all. I just don't think he's the best kicker in the world and I wouldn't want to risk an OT game on him kicking a FG on first down that is roughly the same length as his season high. Too risky. I do think that a lot of his bad % in kicking is due to Heinz Field, it's kinda notorious for being bad to kick in.
Ive always felt that a kicker has no excuse to misse a field goal(unless its the snap or hold), but i think hes always been a pretty reliable kicker and one so-so season wouldnt be enough for me not to trust him because he can make the big ones.
I think kicking a FG would be one of the hardest things in all of football personally (a longer one of course). But then again they do it everyday and are usually very good at it.
Let me rephrase that, everything has to be PERFECT for a FG. Blocking, snap, hold, timing, then allowing for the wind, surface conditions (slippery, muddy, etc). It takes more skill than anything else, just not the athleticism and you don't take a beating.
Hines ward wont play in the Aug 12 preseason game at arizona, so Nate Washington will be starting at the #1 spot, while Holmes and Reid Handle most of the Punt/Kick Returning.
I actually think that's good news. It gives our other WRs, who are mainly young guys with little experience, the chance to play more. Ward isn't going to get much out of these games besides getting rid of some rust. As an 8 year vet or w/e he is, in the same system with the same QB for the last 2 years, shouldn't be much, if anything, new to learn for him. This way we'll be able to make sure we keep the best WRs on the regular roster.
I dont know why but i like Nate Washington, it seems like he has done it the hard way to find a spot on the roster and now is in the right position to shine. I think from what i hear this guy could end up to be something special.
I think that's the feeling in Pittsburgh too. I'm coming around to liking the guy now as well. The most impressive thing to me is he runs a 4.5 40, and won his heat of 40's (they ran like 10 or 20 of them in a row...he beat guys like Holmes, Reid, Fast Willie, etc...the real speedsters with 40s in the 4.2s and 4.3s) so that tells me he puts forth maximum effort, or is just in superior conditioning.
