Steelers cut QB Maddox, S Logan, CB Williams
March 6, 2006
PITTSBURGH (Ticker) - The Pittsburgh Steelers saved more than $3 million under the salary cap by releasing four players on Monday.
Backup quarterback Tommy Maddox, reserve cornerback Willie Williams and backup safeties Mike Logan and Russell Stuvaints were waived by Pittsburgh.
The Steelers are hoping to re-sign wide receiver and punt returner Antwaan Randle-El and cornerback DeShea Townsend, who are eligible to become free agents on Thursday.
Maddox, 34, has been with the Steelers since 2001 and was named the NFL's Comeback Player of the Year in 2002 after passing for a career-high 3,414 yards. He was injured in 2004 and lost his starting job to Ben Roethlisberger.
Williams, 36, was the only player on the Steelers roster for both Super Bowl XXX and Super Bowl XL. However, he was inactive for the Steelers' 21-10 win over Seattle in Super Bowl XL and played in just four games last season.
Logan, 31, has been with Pittsburgh since 2001. He played in 12 games last season and had 10 tackles on special teams.
Stuvaints spent the last three seasons with the Steelers. He played in just four games in 2005 before being placed on injured reserve in November.
