"Brian Westbrook's contract situation isn't resolved, but the Eagles running back said Wednesday that he will play in the preseason opener Friday against the Steelers at Heinz Field.
"I guess so," the All-Pro running back said. "Coach [Andy Reid] said the starters would probably play about a quarter and a half, so I would expect to."
Westbrook reported to training camp July 24 in good faith, hoping that the team and his agent, Todd France, would agree on a new contract that would satisfy Westbrook's financial desires.
Westbrook suggested that talks have come closer to an agreement and said he was "optimistic about the way things have been going."
"They continue to talk, trying to discuss the structure and numbers and things like that, trying to get it done," he said. "Hopefully, they'll be able to get it done soon."
Asked if he harbored reservations about playing in the preseason without a new contract, Westbrook said he didn't worry about sustaining an injury or jeopardizing ongoing discussions.
Besides, he probably won't even be involved in more than a half-dozen plays. He barely played in last year's exhibition opener, and there was no contract issue at that time.
"It wasn't very much [snaps]," he said."
