Philip Rivers could hardly remember the last time he completed less than 50 percent of his passes in a game. The only time this season that he’d thrown for fewer yards was in Week 1. But the box score provided plenty of joy for the young quarterback, thanks to one big statistic.
“We won the game,” Rivers said. “Hopefully I don’t have to talk about these kinds of games very often. I don’t want to get it blown out of proportion, but you’re talking about 20 throws of the season. I’m not pleased with it. I’m not trying to find an out, but we won. I’ll get the things corrected. My teammates know that. I know that.
Although the offense struggled to find a rhythm at times, teammates praised their young leader for the way that he kept his poise in the huddle and continued to encourage those around him.
“From my standpoint, I couldn’t tell and I don’t think any other guys could tell that he really wasn’t having a good day,” running back LaDainian Tomlinson said. “He was still real positive. Every drive, he always came out and said, ‘Okay guys. Let’s get a score here. Let’s get this thing going.’ That’s what you’ve got to have from your quarterback.”
Rivers was effective when it counted most. He completed four of his last five throws as the Chargers scored on consecutive fourth-quarter drives to pull out the victory.
