Default Dynamic Duo

FOXBORO - Let me get this off my chest: I think they’re going to lose. And I think there is the very real possibility that they are going to lose big.

But before anyone interprets that as a slight against Bill Belichick, Tom Brady and the rest of the Patriots, let’s try to prevent this from degenerating into a schoolyard squabble. Those with even a remote interest in competition of any kind could have nothing but the utmost respect for Belichick and Brady, as peerless a duo as there is in the entire NFL.

Especially at this time of year, Belichick and Brady are the absolute best at what they do.

But this really isn’t about two men anymore.

It’s funny, isn’t it? Five years ago, when the Pats were introduced en masse prior to their Super Bowl victory over the St. Louis Rams, we all preached the benefits of team. We truly believed the whole was greater than the sum of the parts, and the Pats went on to pull off one of the great upsets in the history of professional sports.

Now, two more Super Bowl victories later, we’re relying on precisely the opposite logic. The San Diego Chargers went 14-2 this year and have nine Pro Bowl players, but the Patriots have Belichick and Brady. Somehow, that is supposed to be enough to overcome LaDainian Tomlinson, Shawne Merriman, Antonio Gates, Philip Rivers and Jamal Williams.
