I tend to listen to actual nfl players and coaches before some arrogant faceless name on a message board that refuses to listen to others points and opinions. He was a genius offensive mind and didn't win a superbowl because his defense was on the field too much.

He has milestones. only coach to win 100 games in college and pros - he has coached numerous HOF's and helped to groom HOF coaches. Would madden be who he was without Coryell, I doubt it

I tend to look at the facts.

Like that Don Coryell learned from Gilman who is the one BILL WALSH says is the father of the modern passing game.

What does Bill Walsh know about a passing game right?

Is that what youre saying?

Walsh morphed Paul Brown with Sid Gilman to exploit the new rule changes in 78. Teams were built to stop power running teams and Walsh offense created mismatches like LBs on RBs. Defenses played Dinosaur football back then and Walsh employed timing routes where the QB released the ball before his WR made his break. He also had his QB call out the pass blocking schemes where traditional offenses use the center. But more importantly, the QB has more options in his progression than all other offenses. Combine that with Paul Browns bait and trap style run blocking schemes and you have a recipe for success that influenced far more than Coryells contributions. Walsh was the first to use the pass to set up the run too which forced teams to go to nickel and dime packages as teams spread the field on first & down more.

Teams didnt do that back then and instead tried to grind it out with power rushing.

But foir you to use John Madden is too much.

Madden was succesful with the old rules pre 1978 where Coryells scheme exploited the new rule changes. Coryell didnt come into the league until 78.

I believe Madden was an assistant with him at SDSU.

Al Davis is who schooled John Madden.

Nice try!

John Madden said he learned everything he knew about football from Coryell and Davis filled in the rest. I never disagreed with you that Walsh wasn't an outstanding coach, but Coryell was running the WCO at SDSU before he even went to the pros and orchestrated the best passing offense prior to Walsh implementing his offense in San Fran. you act as though Coryell did nothing in college then came to the NFL and basically got lucky. The dude created passing offense in the ERA of power rushing prior to walsh. You have to give him the credit he deserves man and again it comes down to opinion on whether he should make the hall or not and no one is wrong when it comes to opinion. except the mighty Dr Defense

Its funny how all these fans people say they hated it here, but still come around. LMAO

Coryell was running what we now refer to as the WCO?

No he wasnt.

The name only.

The WCO offesne youre referring to is Sid Gilmans offense. It was called that when Gilman ran it in the early 60s that but that isnt the same scheme that Walsh invented. I understand that it was called that back then but that isnt what Walsh ran and its not even close.

Im not saying he wasnt a good coach but HOF?

Im not the only one who thinks its a stretch which is why he isnt in there.

Walsh and Coryells philosophies were totally different.

You tell me why he isnt there then.

He was a good coach but not worthy of the HOF.

Thats why hes not there.

He isn't in the Hall because he didn't win a superbowl and that is the measuring stick for coaches in the superbowl era. Coryell did more for the game than 90% of the coaches this league has seen, dude deserves it

He didnt do enough at the pro level.

He coached like 12 years with both the Cards and Chargers and didnt win a SB or hit milestones.

In his defense, he went thru an ugly ownership change if I remember correctly when the Bolts transferred hands from Eugene Klien to the Spanos family. He was also victimized by management that had an ugly infatuation with Tom Bass for some reason and wouldnt get him the players on defense. They traded Fred Dean in his prime and also let go of Gary "Big Hands" Johnson before he was done.

Coryell would have won a SB had the ownership gotten him some defense.

I dont doubt that but thats still speculation.

What he did in college is irrelevant. This is the NFL HOF and not the college HOF.

For the record, I also disagree with John Madden being there so it isnt a Raider Charger thing with me.

The hall is sacred and Coryell didnt do enough at the pro level to warrant it.
