Default 49ers trade with broncos

Wednesday, April 19, 2006

The San Francisco 49ers announced Wednesday that they have moved up in the 2006 draft by trading a second and third round pick for the Denver Broncos first round selection (22nd overall).

As a result of the trade the 49ers will now have two first round picks in the 2006 draft. This is the first time San Francisco has had two first-round selections since 2000.

“We took advantage of a great opportunity to acquire a second first-round draft pick today after working out a trade with the Denver Broncos,” head coach Mike Nolan said. “We feel like we acquired more value by making the trade for this pick. I am looking forward to improving our team with all ten draft picks, including the two first-round picks.”

San Francisco has 10 draft picks in 2006: two first-round draft picks, a third round pick from a trade with Washington, an extra sixth-round pick from a trade with Tampa Bay and an additional seventh-round selection from a trade with Jacksonville along with a compensatory pick in the seventh round. The 49ers open the 2006 draft with the sixth and twenty second overall selection in the first round, third (84), fourth (100), the fifth (140), two in the sixth (175) and (192) and three in the seventh (213), (236) and (254) rounds.

imo, this was stupid, this draft is deep and they need players not picks, they gave up a first day pick just to have another first, idiots.

actually, they gave up two first day picks - a 2nd and a 3rd. I'm guessing this means they are after either a LB to replace peterson with that pick, or possibly a RB, as at least one or two of the top backs should be available. they have frank gore, but he's a work in progress at best, and barlow isn't really cut out to be a #1 right now.

that's what I meant, they gave up 2 for 1 meaning they gave up a first day pick, there is plenty of talent to go through the whole first day, they must be targeting someone specific

ah, I gottcha now. and I agree, the 49ers are thinking of someone specific to take with that pick. as for the broncos, they no longer have the option to take WR with their first pick and maybe go RB with the second like some people have been predicting. it will be interesting to see if the "experts" still think the broncos take a WR with that 1st rounder

49ers need help now on both offense and defense this could be good for them.

the 49ers need help on offense and defense and giving up picks is not smart at this point. they do still have 10 picks in the 7 rounds and some speculation that they are going to attempt to trade up to get bush. also, I heard that detroit will take no less than a third for harrington and denver just got an extra third. Hmmmm.

I don't think this is dumb at all, they moved up a lot and now as opposed to just get players with the 2 and 3 they can get 2 QUALITY players/picks. I like the move by them they need a couple of guys that can come in and start for them, I see Davis at TE and Carpenter at Lber for them and he would not have been there in round 2, nice move IMO.

It would appear that the 'niners are targeting two prospects that they feel will be gone by the end of round 1
