SFGate: Niners Turf Blog : Allen plus the Supplemental draft
The 49ers expect Pro Bowl guard Larry Allen will report for training camp on July 28 with the rest of his teammates. A team spokesman said Allen, who skipped three weeks of organized team activity practices last month, hasn't given an indication he won't report.
Retirement rumors arose when personnel chief Scot McCloughan hesitated when answering a question from a reporter about Allen's return to the team.
"He was probably just putting some chew in his mouth," a 49ers spokesman said of McCloughan's pause.
Retirement might be inviting to Allen, who had trouble making his self-imposed 325-pound weight last year. He was excused from this year's voluntary OTA's by coach Mike Nolan, who has kept in contact with the future Hall of Famer. Nolan said last month that Allen was making use of the $60,000 of workout equipment he installed in his home.
