Default 49ers notes: Left guard can be right guy at many spots

When the 49ers need to fill a spot almost anywhere on the offensive line, they lean on Adam Snyder.

Snyder, who had played left guard through spring workouts and training camp, on Wednesday took his first snaps at left tackle since last season after starter Jonas Jennings left practice because of dehydration. Backup left tackle Patrick Estes sprained his ankle in an intrasquad scrimmage Saturday and will be out at least another week.

Snyder was able to adapt quickly, saying: "You're getting back to a position that you've played for so long. Things come to you quicker and you don't have to think as much."

Since joining the team as a third-round draft pick from Oregon in 2005, Snyder has played every position on the line except center.

He started seven games at left tackle as a rookie and three more last year in place of Jennings and Anthony Clement. He also had three starts at left guard last year in place of Larry Allen. Snyder also has seen time at right guard and was competing with Kwame Harris for the right-tackle spot last summer before a biceps injury sidelined him for much of camp.

With this year's addition of rookie tackle Joe Staley and the development of Estes, the 49ers wanted Snyder to concentrate on left guard, where he would be the primary backup for the 35-year-old Allen.

Snyder's return to left tackle is temporary, Coach Mike Nolan said. "He's going to be on that left side, and if he has to bump out to

tackle, he can, but right now he's not competing there."

Eventually, Snyder said, he would like to settle in at one position, "but right now, the way I'm looking at it is, any opportunity I get is a good opportunity and I'll take it. If I get nailed down at a position and that's what they see for me, that's great. Then I can really start to dial in the things I need to do consistently to be the best player at that position. But if my role is to jump around and that's what I need to do for the team to win, then that's what I'm going to do."

Owners John and Denise York and son Jed York will lead a 49ers delegation attending today's services for former 49ers coach Bill Walsh at Stanford Memorial Church.

Also in attendance will be Nolan and his wife, Kathy, defensive end Bryant Young and his wife, Kristin, and about a dozen staff members who worked with Walsh when he coached the team.

Assistant head coach Mike Singletary will run the team's practices today.

Walsh died of leukemia at 75 last Monday.

Fullback Zak Keasey was seen hitting the ground and bouncing back up about a dozen times in the midst of team drills. It turns out he was rapping his own knuckles over a couple of misplays.

"I dropped a pass and I messed up on a blitz protection, so that was just a little punishment for doing something wrong," Keasey said.

Keasey's actions were reminiscent of former 49ers linebacker Julian Peterson, who used to "punish" his misplays by dropping down and reeling off push-ups.

Rookie safety Dashon Goldson was held out of the afternoon practice after suffering a leg contusion while delivering a hard hit on rookie wide receiver Jason Hill in the morning session.
