Bears scare up a rout of 49ers
There was more suspense in the doughnut race on the videoboard at Soldier Field than in the 41-10 butt-whipping the Bears hung on the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.
The Bears’ seventh straight victory had ceased to be a contest by the end of the first quarter, in which they scored a franchise-record 24 points in the first 13:58 and blanked the visitors.
In the spirit of Halloween, the 49ers came disguised as an NFL football team.

Singletary remains confident despite blowout
Disgusted. Frustrated. Shell-shocked. Horrified.
Pick any of those adjectives and you know how Mike Singletary felt walking off the Soldier Field turf Sunday.
The 49ers assistant head coach, who made his living wreaking the same kind of havoc that was enacted on his team in a 41-10 shellacking, could not believe what had just transpired.

49ers helpless in stopping avalanche
In the first half of the San Francisco 49ers' 41-10 loss to the Bears, running back Frank Gore ran like Al Gore and the 49ers gave away the football as if they were distributing Halloween candy.
The 49ers were overpowered, overrun, decimated, destroyed. Trailing 41-0 after 30 minutes, they made people wonder if this is what the Bears' 73-0 slaughter of the Washington Redskins in 1940 looked like.

Nolan addresses questions, but runs short on answers
A defiant Mike Nolan tackled questions as he wishes his defense would tackle running backs and wide receivers following Sunday's 41-10 loss.
Of the team's five losses this season, three have been by a combined score of 130-29. The defense, Nolan's specialty, continues to surrender points at a frightening pace.
Even when Nolan has a feel for what the opposing offense will do, he can't get the defense to stop it.

Smith can't escape Urlacher
Alex Smith vs. Brian Urlacher was not a matchup the 49ers ever wanted and, when it developed a few times Sunday, it predictably did not go in the 49ers' favor.
On Smith's third attempt of the day, with the 49ers already trailing 10-0, Urlacher, who was blocked at the line of scrimmage, batted the pass up in the air, then reached out and intercepted the ball with one arm.
``Just a lucky play, I guess,'' the Chicago Bears linebacker said.

49ers make it all too easy for Bears
At kickoff, the point spread looked insulting.
By the final whistle, it was a compliment.
If the 49ers had stayed within 17 points of the Bears at Soldier Field, they would have come home the way they left, as one of the NFL's works in progress. In fact, they could have lost by three touchdowns without inviting comparisons to the Cardinals and Dolphins. They could even have lost 41-10, as they did, without putting their coach in the position of defending his entire administration.

Bears back in the saddle
Soldier Field did not need a scoreboard Sunday. It needed an abacus.

49ers' giveaways make rout easy
The 49ers' despair and frustration was running at a fever pitch before the first quarter was over. By halftime, they were at a loss.
``Hopefully, I'll never again have to deal with coming in down 41-0'' at halftime, quarterback Alex Smith said.
Committing a season-high five turnovers, the 49ers lost to unbeaten Chicago 41-10 Sunday to remain winless on the road, where they have been outscored 116-37, including 82-10 in the past two outings.
