San Francisco 49ers HC Mike Nolan said today that QB Alex Smith's right shoulder separation won't require surgery and Smith could return as early as Oct. 21 against the Giants. An MRI revealed a third-degree separation of his passing shoulder. Nolan said doctors assign six grades of varying severity in categorizing a shoulder separation and Smith's was in the mid-range. He added that Smith's possible return for the Giants game was a best-case scenario. "It's potential," Nolan said. "I know that's what Alex is saying." Furthermore, Nolan also said team doctors might be able to get a better read on how long Smith will be sidelined by Thursday, when the swelling in his shoulder is expected to decrease.
Trent Dilfer, who replaced Smith and went 12-of-23 for 123 yards and two interceptions against the Seahawks, will get the start for the 49ers this Sunday against Baltimore, making it the second straight week he will play against one of his former teams.
