Nedney apologizes for obscene gesture

Joe Nedney was showered with boos and catcalls after sending a 49ers kickoff out of bounds during a 31-10 loss to the New Orleans Saints.

The former San Jose State star responded with an obscene gesture, rubbing the back of his head while showing an extended middle finger toward the crowd. Nedney later issued an apology through the team after reporters questioned club officials about the incident.

"I apologize for my gesture at today's game," Nedney said in a statement released by the team. "It is tough to be part of a loss and my emotions got the best of me. Nobody is harder than ourselves on our team. I know losing is tough for fans, too. It was an emotional response during the game and again, I apologize."

Nedney had kicked a 29-yard field goal for the 49ers' first points. The decision to kick was roundly booed because the team was trailing 24-0.

A fresh wave of boos sounded after Nedney's ensuing kick went out of bounds, allowing the Saints to start at the 40-yard line. A photo of Nedney's response promptly appeared at profootballtalk.com.

Nedney may be subject to a fine or other discipline by the team or the league. Last season, Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick showed the finger to a group of heckling fans after a loss to New Orleans. The league fined Vick $10,000 and directed him to donate another $10,000 to a charity of his choice.

At least he was more discrete about it than Vick.

I found that entertaining as he was telling the sore loser fans to 'kiss this' or 'up yours'. Fans that encourage such a thing should be the ones to get fined as Nedney didn't do a thing to deserve that. I heard the game was very ugly when Nedney did the gesture. That's why some NFL players go bad is because the fans encourage this in their demented way because they're sore losers.
