Default 49ers tried to trade for Briggs

49ers Insider: Report says team tried to deal for Briggs
By Matthew Barrows

SANTA CLARA -- Coach Mike Nolan and team personnel chief Scot McCloughan declined to comment Friday on a report that the 49ers tried to trade for Elk Grove native Lance Briggs before the Oct. 16 trade deadline.

According to Yahoo! Sports, the 49ers and Bears were working on a deal that would have sent Briggs, Chicago's second-leading tackler, to San Francisco for an unspecified draft pick. The 49ers would have given Briggs, 26, the long-term deal the linebacker has been seeking from the Bears.

"That player's on another football team, guys," Nolan said when asked about Briggs. "I don't comment on players on other teams."

Asked if the 49ers were close to pulling off any of trades before the deadline, Nolan said: "Uh, not close enough, it appears. No one is on our side."

The deal was scuttled because the Bears had designated Briggs as their franchise player, according to the Yahoo! report. Under league rules, franchise players can't sign long-term deals with other teams.

Nolan did say that he was in favor of altering the trade rules. The trade deadline, as it stands, occurs about a third into the season. Nolan said that's too soon.

"I would like to see us have a greater window of opportunity than the current window of opportunity," he said. "… I would like to see it go into November."

We always have a bad habit of getting crap players instead of good ones like Briggs. I don't know who manages the team anymore, but they've fallen asleep at the wheel. WE do dumb things like let J Peterson go and keep the sap D Smith around to do nothing but steal our money. Don't get me started on the draft, we missed WRs like Calvin Johnson for we won too many games or Santonio Holmes that went to the Steelers.

That would have been a dumb trade for SF.

SF runs a 3-4, so what should you do?

Go out and give up a proboble first round pick for a Tampa 2 LB

With Briggs speed he'd fit in better with the 3-4 than the tampax 2.

No he wouldnt. 3-4 relys on size more than speed from the LB's. OLB's are really stand up DE's and ILB's need to be big enough to take on guards every play. Briggs could play a 3-4 as a coverage backer ILB, but he would get killed as an every down player. If he played a 3-4 he would have to be substituted alot

That's what I mean grunt. In todays world of 350lb LBs and OL no he wouldn't be good as a pass rusher. But he can and has been effective stopping the run.

But thats the thing, stopping the run in the 3-4 is different than the 4-3. 3-4 ILB's have to take on guards when they stop the run, where 4-3 LB's dont. He would have to play inside in a 3-4 because he isnt an edge rusher, and he wouldn't be able to take on guards play after play

Briggs doesn't have to play inside/DT he can play LB just like he does now and plug the holes just like he does now as well as chase RBs down from behind. This can be done in the 3-4 and the 4-3.

Im not talking about DT, Im talking about ILB in a 3-4. In a 3-4 ILB's take on guards on running play's. They dont play sideline to sideline
