well, he should have had surgery right away and gave him more time to recover, but whaddaya going to do, he was in denial. Dr Andrews always sets it straight though.

And let's not forget Nolan and Yorks playing the game of which one is the bigger idiot? I'm thankful Tim Allan is not the real Tim Taylor...I've seen enough Fool Time on the 49ers team!

I hope it's not too late for Smith to salvage his season, or we're screwed bad.

It was the sack from the 340 pound Seahawk Siragusa wannabe that put Smith on the shelf. That's why I hope Pack or Cowboys Kill Seattle in the playoffs in the worse way, and then Holmgren is fired. I still feel even if it was an accident, it was a cheap hit that put Smith out.

Alex Smith disputes Fox TV report about surgery
A few postgame notes from the 49ers' 27-7 loss to the Vikings.

--QB Alex Smith said after the game that the Fox TV report that he would have season-ending surgery after the season was inaccurate. He said he never told JC Pearson before the game he had opted for season-ending surgery. He said it is not call.

"I never said that," Smith said. "I said it was a possibility."

Smith has said all along that surgery is a possibility, so there's nothing new there. Smith is scheduled to do his normal rehab throwing Monday and Tuesday, a team spokesman said.

--QB Trent Dilfer left the game late in the first half with a concussion after taking a big (and legal) hit from Vikings CB Charles Gordon. Coach Mike Nolan said Dilfer was taken to Stanford Hospital for observation. He said when he spoke to him at halftime, Dilfer was "a little woozy." His family came into the locker room to visit him. It seems doubtful whether Dilfer will be able to play Saturday when the 49ers face the Bengals.

--DL Bryant Young intimated that his career might be coming to an end. He did not officially announce his retirement, but . . .

"I'm just trying to get through this day," Young said when asked about his future. "My days are numbered . . . let's be real about it."

When asked if he might retire at the end of the season, Young said, "I'll leave it at that. You can read into it how you may."

Later, he was asked if he is still having fun playing football. He said this season has not been fun.

"This has probably been one of the more emotional and mentally tough years I've been through because of the expectations . . . Trying to figure out why it went wrong is puzzling."

--Injury report: DL Ronald Fields (left shoulder sprain), LT Adam Snyder (neck) and LB Jeff Ulbrich (high right ankle) are probable; while Dilfer is questionable on the preliminary injury report.

Niners QB Smith will undergo shoulder surgery, done for season
Dec. 11, 2007
CBSSports.com wire reports

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Quarterback Alex Smith will undergo surgery on his right shoulder, ending a disappointing season for the San Francisco 49ers' former No. 1 overall draft pick.

The 49ers announced the decision late Monday night after Smith's latest consultation with team doctors and Dr. James Andrews over the separated right shoulder that has bedeviled him for nearly two months. Smith will be placed on injured reserve this week.

Smith was sacked by Seattle's Rocky Bernard on the third play of a loss to the Seahawks on Sept. 30, and he was never the same. He sat out two games with the injury, then returned for an ugly three-game stint before the 49ers removed him from the lineup for the last four games when he complained of a still-sore shoulder and an aching forearm.

Smith completed just 48.7 percent of his passes for 914 yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions this season, struggling along with the rest of the NFL's lowest-ranked offense. His passer rating of 57.2 is the second-lowest among all quarterbacks who qualify for league statistics -- only better than teammate Trent Dilfer's 55.1.

The injury increased tensions on the 49ers (3-10) during a hugely disappointing season for a team that began the year with playoff aspirations.

San Francisco coach Mike Nolan traded veiled insults with Tom Condon, Smith's powerful agent, over the team's handling of Smith's injury. Nolan insisted the 49ers proceeded according to their medical staff's recommendations and Smith's feelings, while Smith intimated Nolan hadn't understood his concerns.
