49ers Pick Up Clause To Keep Smith Through 2010.

Had the team not picked up the clause, Smith would have become a free agent after this season. GM Scot McCloughan made it out to be a sign of faith in Smith, but from what we understand of Smith's complicated contract, he would have gotten the money one way or another. He'll still compete with Shaun Hill for the starting job.
