Priders end grey cup drought
Quote:
The Saskatchewan Roughriders ended an 18-year Grey Cup drought Sunday for the province where, arguably, it means the most to the fans.
"They've been starved for success for so long," Saskatchewan general manager Eric Tillman said about the team's supporters, or Rider Nation as they're better known.
"They've been behind this franchise through thick and thin. They bleed green, and they deserve this."
This was a 23-19 victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the CFL's championship game played before a sellout crowd of 52,230 at Rogers Centre.
"We have a saying in Saskatchewan: tough times don't last ,but tough people do," said tackle Gene Makowsky, the 13-year Riders veteran from Saskatoon.
"Our fans stuck with us, and this is their reward."
With 54 seconds left in the game and the Riders clinging to a four-point lead, cornerback James Johnson stepped in front of a pass intended for Derick Armstrong to seal the victory on the same field Saskatchewan won its last Grey Cup back in 1989.
